Commission launches RAISE pledging initiative to boost AI support for researchers across Europe
At the European AI in Science Summit in Dublin on 14 October 2026, the European Commission launched the RAISE (Resource for AI Science in Europe) pledging initiative. The scheme aims to mobilise private-sector and philanthropic resources to strengthen AI research and innovation capacity across Europe, supplementing public funding. Initial pledges include commitments from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Nvidia, Elsevier, Sanofi, Frontiers, Mistral, and Google DeepMind. As part of the initiative, Mistral AI and CERN announced a partnership to develop a major foundation model for physics research. The Commission also presented updated Living Guidelines on the Responsible Use of Generative AI in Research and launched the RAISE Hub, Forum, and Observatory to connect the European AI-in-science community. The initiative is reviewed annually at future AI in Science Summits.

Eurobarometer survey highlights growing use of AI in European companies
On 13 October 2026, the Commission published a Eurobarometer survey showing that 42% of European SMEs and mid-cap companies already use AI or algorithmic management, with a further 21% planning adoption. Uses include customer service, performance monitoring, logistics, and staff scheduling. High investment costs, legal uncertainty, and lack of expertise remain barriers. The survey aligns with the Commission’s ongoing policy framework, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the AI Act, and anticipates the forthcoming Quality Jobs Act to provide further clarity for AI and algorithmic management in the workplace.
