Commission sets out new strategy on combating trafficking in human beings

On 15 October 2026, the European Commission unveiled a new strategy aimed at combating trafficking in human beings. The strategy responds to a 16.1% rise in registered victims within the EU between 2023 and 2024, with over 20,000 cases identified. It sets out six pillars: leveraging technology for prevention and detection, enhancing private sector and labour inspector engagement, disrupting organised crime, addressing migration-related risks, strengthening crisis preparedness, and improving protection for vulnerable individuals. The strategy builds on the revised Anti-Trafficking Directive, which came into force in 2024, and aligns with the proposed sanctions regime targeting organised crime introduced in July 2026. Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and Commissioner Magnus Brunner underscored the need for coordinated, adaptable action. The strategy will be discussed by the Parliament and Council and is accompanied by the 6th progress report on the previous EU Strategy.

Eurobarometer survey highlights growing use of AI in European companies

A new Eurobarometer survey, published on 13 October 2026, found that 42% of EU SMEs and mid-cap companies use AI and algorithmic management tools, with 21% planning future adoption. The survey indicates AI use is highest in customer service, performance monitoring, and logistics. High investment costs, legal uncertainty, and lack of expertise remain barriers, while 75% of companies expect AI to improve job quality. The Commission links these findings to recent regulatory initiatives, including the AI Act and the upcoming Quality Jobs Act, which aims to clarify employers' obligations regarding algorithmic management.
