Federal Government Extends Excise Duty Relief for Brewers, Distillers, and Winemakers
The Government of Canada announced on May 20 a two-year extension of reduced alcohol excise duty rates for brewers, distillers, and winemakers. This measure, which began April 1, 2026, caps annual inflation adjustments for beer, spirits, and wine excise duties at 2% and continues to grant craft brewers a 50% reduction in the excise duty rate on their first 15,000 hectolitres brewed. The extension is projected to provide over $30 million in relief through 2028; for craft breweries, the half-rate could represent up to $90,000 in additional savings for the 2026–27 fiscal year. Minister Rechie Valdez and Secretary of State Buckley Belanger highlighted the continuation of this policy during a visit to a Regina-based brewery.
