Plan to eliminate backlog of air travel complaints and expand enforcement powers
Minister Steven MacKinnon, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister of Transport, signaled a new effort to clear the backlog of nearly 100,000 air travel complaints pending before the Canadian Transportation Agency. The government intends to contract a neutral, third-party dispute resolution body to issue rapid decisions, which airlines found at fault must address promptly. Confidentiality rules on complaints will be relaxed for more transparency. Additionally, the Canadian Transportation Agency's authority will be reinforced, allowing it to levy fines up to $1 million for systemic regulatory breaches. Legislation proposing these changes will be introduced in the coming weeks, with further public consultations expected as part of the regulatory process.
