Nearly $1 million investment modernizes Nunavik food storage and logistics
The Government of Canada announced the completion of an expansion project for the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau Québec's (FCNQ) warehouse on the Island of Montréal. Parliamentary Secretary Ginette Lavack, representing Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty, outlined the upgrades, which include 1,580 m² of new refrigerated space, 6,500 m² of additional warehousing, and 1,670 m² for offices and shared use. The $966,000 federal funding, part of a total investment nearing $1 million, will allow FCNQ to more efficiently supply 14 Inuit cooperatives across Nunavik. Expanded capacity enables bulk purchasing, helps reduce supply disruptions due to weather, and is expected to mitigate price fluctuations for essential goods, including perishable foods. This initiative supports improved logistics for northern communities, with potential effects for operators involved in regional food distribution and supply chain management.

FedNor channels $105,000 into youth employment and cultural tourism in North Bay
Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) detailed a $105,000 investment aimed at stemming youth out-migration in the Nipissing-Timiskaming region. Announced by MP Pauline Rochefort, the funding supports internships at North Bay Theatre and Arts Community Centre (Capitol Centre) and the City of North Bay’s Planning Department, each receiving $52,500 for 18-month youth placements. At the Capitol Centre, the intern will digitize the art collection and establish an online gallery as well as launch an Artwork Loaning Program. The municipal intern will focus on urban planning initiatives, including updates to the Downtown Waterfront Master Plan and engagement projects around Trout Lake Policy. Data from FedNor point to a high retention rate: 63% of interns remain with host employers and 91% seek work locally after placement. Industry participants may note the focus on cultural heritage digitization, urban development, and strategies to enhance area tourism.
