Commission proposes overhaul of EU standardisation system

On 5 October 2026, the European Commission adopted a proposal to modernise the European standardisation system, aiming to accelerate standards development and reinforce EU competitiveness. The proposal introduces stricter deadlines for standards development, clearer procedures for using common specifications, and provisions for wider participation from small and medium-sized enterprises and civil society. The revision also seeks to improve international coordination, facilitate free access to standards referenced in EU law, and create an Expert Centre on European Standardisation. The proposal updates Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012 and follows recent Court of Justice rulings on access to harmonised standards. The measures will now be considered by the European Parliament and Council.
