Eurobarometer survey underscores EU public support for agriculture and rural areas

On 21 September 2026, the European Commission released findings from its tenth Eurobarometer survey on Europeans, Agriculture and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The survey, conducted in all 27 Member States between May and June 2026, involved 26,456 respondents. It found that 95% of Europeans consider agriculture and rural areas important for the EU's future, and 93% believe securing a stable food supply is crucial. Commissioner Christophe Hansen commented that the CAP is central to delivering on these priorities. Quality, origin, environmental standards, and short supply chains are cited as key determinants in food purchasing decisions. The Commission will launch a new ‘European food’ campaign, as announced in President von der Leyen’s State of the Union speech. EU trade agreements are viewed positively, seen as diversifying markets and promoting EU standards globally.
