Commission imposes interim measures on Meta to preserve free access to WhatsApp for rival AI assistants
On 8 June 2026, the European Commission ordered Meta to reinstate free access for third-party general-purpose AI assistants to the WhatsApp for Business API. The interim measures require Meta to offer access under the same terms as before October 2025, i.e. free of charge, until the end of the ongoing antitrust investigation (case number AT.41034). The decision follows Meta's prior change to block, and later to allow only paid access for, external AI assistants, which the Commission found could impede competition in evolving AI markets. Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera stated these measures will remain until the investigation is concluded or until June 2029 at the latest. Meta must comply with the order within 5 working days. Article 102 TFEU and Regulation 1/2003 provide the legal basis for the interim action.

Commission presents first-ever EU strategies for islands and coastal communities
On 9 June 2026, the European Commission adopted two integrated strategies targeting the unique challenges faced by EU islands and coastal communities. The policies focus on improved connectivity, economic diversification, climate resilience, and demographic issues for 17 million islanders and 95 million residents of coastal areas. Measures include technical assistance, regular dialogues, support for blue economy projects, and frameworks for infrastructure upgrades. The strategies aim to incorporate the needs of these territories into broader EU policy. Commissioner Raffaele Fitto and Commissioner Costas Kadis provided remarks on the governance structure and four main pillars for implementation. These proposals also reference input from stakeholders and are linked to the European Ocean Pact launched in 2025. Outermost Regions are addressed separately.
Commission and EIB Group sign €22 billion InvestEU amendment
On 9 June 2026, the European Commission and European Investment Bank (EIB) Group signed an agreement adding €22 billion in strategic financing to the InvestEU programme. This reflects the new Omnibus II regulation, adopted in December 2025, which strengthened the EU's main investment arm. The additional funds are expected to mobilise around €70 billion by the end of the current Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), supporting innovation, green transition, digitalisation, and SME access to finance. The InvestEU Fund now has a minimum mobilisation target of €55 billion as required by the Omnibus II package. Administrative processes for SMEs will be streamlined under the new arrangements.
Commission updates EU Air Safety List: Air Express Algeria banned, Kyrgyz carriers removed
On 8 June 2026, the European Commission published the 48th update of the EU Air Safety List, introducing a ban on the Algerian airline Air Express Algeria due to persistent safety deficiencies. Conversely, all air carriers from Kyrgyzstan were removed from the list following significant improvements in safety oversight. The change reflects the unanimous opinion of the EU Air Safety Committee and incorporates recent findings from audits and consultations. Following the update, 154 airlines are banned, including 126 from 16 countries due to systemic issues, and 28 individual airlines due to specific safety failures. The update coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Air Safety List.

Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1317: Amended Air Carrier Ban List
Published 10 June 2026, this regulation updates Regulation (EC) No 474/2006 regarding the list of airlines banned from operating within the EU. Notably, Air Express Algeria is now included for failing to address safety concerns, while all air carriers certified in Kyrgyzstan have been removed following improved compliance with international safety standards. The regulation reflects recent technical assessments and hearings with both national authorities and the EU Air Safety Committee.
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1200: Implementation of €3 Customs Duty on Low-Value Consignments
Published 8 June 2026, this regulation amends Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/2447, adapting customs procedures to reflect the introduction of a temporary €3 customs duty on distance sales of imported goods valued under €150. The measure aligns customs and VAT procedures, specifies monitoring references, and updates documentation requirements. It synchronises with Council Regulation (EU) 2026/382 and comes into force on 1 July 2026.
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1305: Updates rules for bivalve mollusc imports from the United States
Adopted 11 June 2026, this regulation amends Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1641 to revise certification requirements for imports of live, chilled, frozen, or processed bivalve molluscs, echinoderms, tunicates, and marine gastropods from the United States. It introduces new attestations in line with veterinary medicine rules, especially concerning antimicrobial use, and sets a transitional phase for certificates already issued before the amendment.

On 12 June 2026, the AGRI Committee scheduled a press conference for 16 June to present the compromise reached on amendments to several EU legal acts addressing farmers’ bargaining power and the regulation of written contracts in the food supply chain.
