On May 1, in Saint John, Secretary of State Wayne Long presented the Team Canada Strong strategy, a nationwide measure to recruit, train, and hire 80,000 to 100,000 new Red Seal trades workers over the next five years. The measure, announced in the Spring Economic Update, encompasses a $6 billion investment providing end-to-end support for apprentices, a targeted 50% reduction in Red Seal certification time, and alignment with national priorities such as affordable housing, infrastructure, and defence. $2 billion will support paid placements leading directly into registered apprenticeships, and the new Build Canada Apprenticeship Service will offer up to $10,000 for an apprentice’s first-year salary along with job-matching and employer supports. Further, $331 million over five years will modernize apprenticeship training and digitize the Red Seal Program. A $3.4 billion fund addresses barriers to long-term employment for apprentices, introducing a $5,000 completion bonus and a $400 weekly in-class training top-up, for a total potential payment of up to $16,000 per apprentice in addition to EI. The Canadian Armed Forces program will receive $250 million to expand trades training, including new pathways for apprentices to contribute to CAF operations during training.
