EU budget delivers key results for Europe in 2025
On 7 October 2026, the European Commission released a summary of the Court of Auditors' Annual Report, marking the 19th consecutive year that EU accounts received a clean bill of health. The EU budget in 2025 enabled €88.3 billion for Ukraine, €12.9 billion for research and innovation, and €53.2 billion under the Common Agricultural Policy. NextGenerationEU supported Member State reforms, with €87.3 billion paid across 34 requests. Investments included €3.3 billion for affordable housing and €14.5 billion for climate adaptation. Security and defence were strengthened with the ReArm Europe plan and €1 billion awarded via the European Defence Fund. The Commission noted an error rate of 3.8%, comparable to last year, and preventive measures worth €9 billion. The anti-fraud architecture review began in July 2025, results due end 2026.

NextGenerationEU reaches implementation finish line
On 6 October 2026, the Commission presented its fifth annual report on the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), noting €450 billion disbursed in grants and loans, nearly 80% of the total requested. By 31 August 2026, Member States were required to complete milestones and targets, with 4,082 fulfilled and 1,899 under assessment. Digital investments amounting to €140 billion and green transition funds of €287 billion were allocated. The RRF contributed to administrative digitalisation in several Member States and supported reforms across justice, labour markets, and energy. Labour market reforms in Spain led to a 3% increase in overall employment. The Commission is now assessing the final 32 payment requests, with remaining disbursements to conclude by end of 2026.
Q&A on new Standardisation Regulation
On 5 October 2026, the Commission published a detailed Q&A on the new Standardisation Regulation, outlining changes to accelerate standards development in Europe. The regulation aims to reduce time to develop standards by one third and mandates free access to harmonised standards referenced in EU law. Small and medium-sized enterprises are set to benefit from faster procedures and reduced participation costs. The Commission, following consultation with CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI, may issue requests directly to designated standardisation organisations. The reform strengthens EU coordination in international bodies and introduces binding deadlines, digital monitoring, and transition periods. The rules will enter into force following formal adoption and publication.
