Commission proposes flexibility to methane importers amid energy market strain

On 13 October 2026, the European Commission adopted a proposal to postpone by one year the implementation of specific provisions of the EU Methane Regulation related to importers. The targeted amendment concerns monitoring, reporting and verification obligations for natural gas, oil and coal importers, as well as methane-intensity reporting requirements for importers and Union producers. This delay aims to help avoid additional pressures on the security of supply of imported fossil fuels in the current geopolitical context, particularly following disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to reduce methane emissions and stated the delay will allow importers extra time to ensure full compliance with the Regulation. The proposal will be submitted to the European Parliament and Council for adoption. Commissioner Dan Jørgensen emphasised the need for flexibility as Europe faces a challenging winter.
