Commission sets out new strategy on combating trafficking in human beings

The European Commission published a new strategy to combat trafficking in human beings on 15 October 2026, ahead of the EU Anti-Trafficking Day. The strategy responds to a 16.1% increase in registered victims between 2023 and 2024, with over 20,000 victims identified in the EU this period. Six priorities were outlined: leveraging technology, boosting engagement with business and labour inspectors, stepping up action against organised crime, addressing migration-linked risks, increasing crisis preparedness, and strengthening victim protection. The Commission will establish a European business coalition against trafficking, reinforce cooperation among labour inspectors, and promote cross-border investigations. The new framework builds on the revised Anti-Trafficking Directive in force since July 2026 and will be implemented in cooperation with Member States, EU Agencies, and international partners.

On 13 October 2026, the European Commission released €2.86 billion to Ukraine under the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, as foreseen in Regulation (EU) 2026/467. The Commission noted that €17 billion in budget support remains available for Ukraine for the rest of 2026, subject to reform progress. Since 2022, the EU has provided €231.5 billion in overall support, including €3.8 billion from immobilised Russian assets.

Commission proposes flexibility to methane importers to help save costs

Amid rising energy prices linked to the Middle East crisis, the European Commission proposed on 13 October 2026 to postpone by one year the implementation of specific import-related obligations under the EU Methane Regulation (2024). The targeted amendment concerns monitoring, reporting, and verification requirements for natural gas, oil, and coal importers, and corresponding methane-intensity criteria. The Commission stated that the delay is designed to alleviate pressure on European industry and national administrations, while maintaining the Regulation's environmental ambition. The proposal, now submitted to the European Parliament and Council, is intended to provide more time for compliance efforts in a challenging energy context.

Commission accepts commitments by Sanofi to address possible anticompetitive disparagement of competing flu vaccine for vulnerable patients

On 13 October 2026, the European Commission made legally binding the commitments offered by Sanofi under Article 9(1) of Regulation 1/2003, following concerns about alleged disparagement campaigns against Fluad, a competing enhanced flu vaccine in Germany and France. Sanofi has agreed, until March 2030, not to use certain negative statements regarding Fluad in its communications with healthcare professionals and to publish corrective statements on its German and French websites. The Commission's preliminary findings indicated possible abuse of dominant position by Sanofi, potentially restricting competition in the market for enhanced flu vaccines. Compliance will be monitored by an independent trustee.
