Copernicus Ocean State Report: Record Marine Heatwaves and Arctic Shifts
The European Commission published the tenth Ocean State Report from the Marine Environment Monitoring Service of Copernicus on 29 September 2026. The report documents significant changes in the ocean, including a 4.2 mm annual rise in sea level since 2012 and a loss of approximately 490,000 km² of Arctic sea-ice per decade between 1979 and 2025. The findings indicate 60% of Arctic coastal infrastructure is now vulnerable to erosion and sea-level rise. The Mediterranean and Black Sea experienced marine heatwaves with temperatures up to 4.6°C above normal in 2024. Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and Commissioner Costas Kadis noted the urgent need for enhanced ocean observation and support for resilient fisheries and coastal communities.
