Commission adopts EU strategies for islands and coastal communities
On 9 June 2026, the European Commission adopted the first EU-wide strategies dedicated to islands and coastal communities. The outlined approach targets the needs of 17 million residents of over 4,000 islands in 16 Member States and the 95 million people living along 70,000 km of EU coastlines in 22 Member States. The strategy for islands is built on economic development, energy security, demography, and crisis preparedness, with integration of island concerns into broader EU policies and renewed focus on connectivity and climate resilience. The coastal communities strategy supports blue economy diversification, adaptation to climate risks, and local-led innovation, referencing the forthcoming Ocean Act and Blue Bioeconomy Initiative. Both strategies align with the European Ocean Pact launched in 2025. EU Outermost Regions are excluded, due to a bespoke policy under Article 349 TFEU. Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto and Commissioner Costas Kadis presented the strategies, which were developed following public consultations.
