Commission approves €13 million French State aid for fishing companies facing increased fuel prices
On 21 May 2026, the European Commission approved a €13 million French scheme to support fishing companies in response to surging fuel costs tied to the Middle East crisis. The measure runs until 31 December 2026 and covers April and May 2026 fuel purchases, granting €0.20 per litre in April and €0.35 per litre in May. This support is the first authorized under the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), adopted by the Commission on 29 April 2026. The scheme was assessed under Article 107(3)(c) TFEU as well as METSAF Sections 1 and 2.1, targeting primary fishery producers and food security. The Commission concluded the scheme fulfills EU State aid requirements and is proportionate to sectoral needs. Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera commented on the short-term relief and the strategic importance of resilient, decarbonised fisheries.
