Commission proposes one-year postponement of Methane Regulation requirements for importers
The European Commission announced a proposal on 13 October 2026 to defer by one year the monitoring, reporting, and verification obligations for natural gas, oil, and coal importers under the EU Methane Regulation (adopted 2024). The measure responds to ongoing energy market disruptions linked to the prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The amendment seeks to avoid supply risks and allow industry, third countries, and national authorities to adapt. Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen stated that the EU’s ambition to reduce methane emissions remains unchanged. The Commission has launched a call for feedback on an Implementing Act specifying reporting templates. Earlier in July, two Recommendations provided guidance on compliance solutions and penalties under the Regulation.

Proportionate requirements and flexibility are provided for smaller farms and animal welfare systems. The rules apply on a staged basis depending on installation capacity, with deadlines ranging from four to six years.
