Canada Deepens Defence Cooperation and Industrial Partnerships with Poland

Minister of National Defence David J. McGuinty led Canada's delegation at the International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce, Poland, where Canada served as the 2026 Lead Nation. The visit resulted in the signing of a renewed Defence Cooperation Agreement between Minister McGuinty and Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Ministers McGuinty and Maninder Sidhu, International Trade, engaged in bilateral meetings to address capability development, industry collaboration, and military training. The event drew more than 200 Canadian organizations and 500 delegates, becoming the largest official Canadian business defense mission to date. Over 20 memorandums of understanding were signed, expanding commercial links and export prospects. Canadian defence exports to Europe have grown by 56% in the past year. The renewed agreement supports the priorities of Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy and participation in the EU’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative. This framework is positioned to accelerate business-to-business connections between Canadian and European defence firms, increase visibility for domestic suppliers, and foster access to new procurement and R&D streams.

Canadian Coast Guard Commissions New Large Vessel for Great Lakes Operations

The Canadian Coast Guard formally added CCGS Judy LaMarsh to its Great Lakes fleet on September 10. This is the first additional large vessel brought to the region in over thirty years. Based in Prescott, Ontario, CCGS Judy LaMarsh will support icebreaking and buoy tending from the St. Lawrence River to the western edge of Lake Superior. The vessel was purchased in 2021 and underwent extensive refit at Newdock St. John’s Dockyard through 2025, including enhancements to propulsion, communications, navigation, and workspace areas. The procurement falls under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, a federal initiative with implications for marine industries, shipyards, and technology providers. The vessel’s acquisition will directly support ice management and navigational safety along major commercial trade routes bordering the United States.

Government Publishes Reports on Proposed Reforms for Major Projects, Trade, and Labour Relations

The Government of Canada released four What We Heard reports summarizing consultations on reforms to federal policies impacting major projects, transportation networks, goods movement, and labour relations. The reports aggregate input from more than 26,000 submissions, representing Indigenous groups, industry, provinces, territories, labour organizations, and other stakeholders. Key themes include calls for efficiency and predictability in regulatory processes for large projects, support for transportation and digital trade enhancements, and updates to the federal labour relations framework. The forthcoming reforms will also include legislative amendments to the Canada Transportation Act, specifically in response to modern security threats, and address corridor-based planning, digital trade, and trade-enabling infrastructure. Minister of National Defence Issues Statement on the 25th Anniversary of September 11 Attacks
