This contract rounds out over $3 billion in space-related contracts, grants, and contributions awarded this year. The Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program's Gateway to the Stars challenge is delivering $17.9 million toward satellite connectivity improvements, including a $4.7 million contract to Kepler Communications for the development of laser-based inter-satellite communication networks, critical for Arctic and remote CAF operations. Recent policy focus also supports the Northern Wide-Area Tracking and Continuous Horizon (NORTHWATCH) program by enhancing threat detection and Arctic surveillance. The CAF will create a new Space Mission Operator occupation to manage increasing operational requirements. Additionally, the Department of National Defence is allocating $1.2 million over two years for talent development initiatives to build a pipeline for future advanced space sector workers.
