- Public Safety and National Security Committee to Discuss Allegations Concerning NATO Military Headquarters: On August 17, 2026, the Public Safety and National Security Committee will meet to consider a request for studying allegations relating to the NATO Military Headquarters. The session takes place in Room 415, Wellington Building, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be webcast.

Canadian Armed Forces launch Operation NANOOK‑TUUGAALIK Arctic Maritime Mission
On August 14, 2026, National Defence announced the launch of Operation NANOOK‑TUUGAALIK, a serial operation running from August through October focused on maintaining a maritime presence and enhancing the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) operational effectiveness in the Arctic. HMCS Robert Hampton Gray will operate alongside the Canadian Coast Guard and several government departments, joined by naval forces from the United States, France, and Denmark. Activities will include patrols, surveillance, community engagement, and refuelling in the Arctic Archipelago. NATO Allied participation aims to strengthen interoperability and shared maritime awareness in the region. Operation NANOOK‑TUUGAALIK occurs in coordination with NATO’s enhanced Vigilance Activity ARCTIC SENTRY, contributing to deterrence and defence across the Alliance and the Arctic.

Canada Imposes Sanctions on Defence Manufacturing Company Streit Group
On August 10, 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand announced sanctions on Streit Group, a defence manufacturer, under the Special Economic Measures (Russia) Regulations. Reports indicate Streit Group-produced armoured vehicles have been used by the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardia) during Russia's war against Ukraine. Canada’s measures target the company’s capacity to supply military technology and equipment to Russia, seeking to disrupt support for Russia’s military-industrial complex. The sanctions are intended to restrict Streit Group’s role in advancing Russia’s defence capabilities amid ongoing hostilities.

Major Investment: $768.6 Million Awarded for Ottawa Regulatory and Security Science Main (RSS Main) Campus
Public Services and Procurement Canada announced on August 10, 2026, a $768.6 million construction services contract to PCL Construction Canada Inc. for the RSS Main project in Ottawa. The development will deliver six science facilities on the CFIA Ottawa Laboratory site, supporting collaboration among agencies including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Canada Border Services Agency, Health Canada, and the Public Health Agency of Canada. The RSS Main campus forms part of Canada’s NATO defence investment commitments and aims to bolster national security, emergency preparedness, and border protection. Indigenous Participation Plans are included in project contracts, with the Government working with Algonquin partners to integrate perspectives into the campus design.

Government Sells Ten Retired CC-130H Hercules Aircraft for Private Sector Firefighting Use
Public Services and Procurement Canada announced the conditional sale of ten surplus CC-130H Hercules aircraft to Coulson Aviation for conversion to aerial firefighting platforms. The decision followed a rigorous evaluation based on end use, regulatory compliance, logistics, cost efficiencies, alignment with public interest, and value to Canada. Each aircraft will require approximately 20,000 labour hours for conversion at Coulson Aviation’s Port Alberni facilities. The project is expected to sustain skilled aerospace jobs in British Columbia through partnerships with Cascade Aerospace and Kelowna Flightcraft. The aircraft will be equipped with Coulson’s proprietary Retardant Aerial Delivery System (RADS) upon completion.

RED COBALT Uncrewed Systems Accelerator 2026: Canadian Joint Forces Host Drone and Counter-Drone Technology Demonstrations
On August 12, 2026, National Defence and Canadian Joint Forces Command will hold the RED COBALT Uncrewed Systems Accelerator event in Killaloe, Ontario. Live demonstrations and industry exhibits will showcase emerging drone and counter-drone technologies. The event includes participation from CAF operators, DND, Canadian Coast Guard, and public safety partners, fostering collaboration between government and industry. The Honourable David J. Canadian Coast Guard Welcomes CCGS Mira Bay Into Service
On August 13, 2026, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, the Canadian Coast Guard officially dedicated the CCGS Mira Bay, a Bay Class Search and Rescue Lifeboat built by Hike Metal Products Ltd. The new vessel is part of a 20-lifeboat procurement under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. All 20 vessels have now been delivered, supporting Canadian shipbuilding and marine industries, and enhancing search and rescue capabilities nationwide.

Minister McGuinty Directs Review of French Language Policies in CAF Units
Concerns were raised regarding the designation of language of work units in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Department of National Defence (DND. Minister David J. McGuinty has directed a review on how unit designations have been implemented to ensure that services, training, and instruction are available in both French and English. The Defence Administrative Orders and Directives 5039-2 remain unchanged regarding delivering personal services in both official languages. The review will examine operational requirements and compliance with language rights across the Defence Team.

National Peacekeepers’ Day Statement from Federal Ministers
