EU-Western Balkans Summit underscores security cooperation in accession path
The EU-Western Balkans Summit convened in Tivat, Montenegro, on 4 June 2026, gathering European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, and leaders from the six Western Balkan partners. Discussions focused on security cooperation, regional reforms, and the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, adopted in 2023, including the disbursement of €673.6 million since 2024 under the EU’s Reform and Growth Facility. Leaders noted closer cooperation on foreign, security, and defence policy, and welcomed gradual integration steps, such as Green Lanes for trade, Single Market access, and digital connectivity. The Summit announced enhanced ties with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity and new opportunities in mobility for civil servants, as well as progress toward roaming arrangements. The next EU-Western Balkans summit is scheduled for December 2026 in Brussels.

Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1218: European Peace Facility assistance to Lebanese Armed Forces
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1218 of 4 June 2026 establishes a €100 million assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (Decision 2021/509) to enhance the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces. The measure finances non-lethal equipment for border control, surveillance (including drones), maritime security, site protection, and medical support, to be implemented over 48 months. Implementation involves Central Project Management Agency, Défense Conseil International, and Économat des Armées.
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1202: Extending Moldova EPF assistance timeline
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1202 amends Decision (CFSP) 2023/921, extending its implementation period by 17 months, now running for 53 months from first contract signature. The adjustment addresses delayed equipment deliveries to the Armed Forces of Moldova under the European Peace Facility.
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1201: Further extension of Moldova military assistance delivery
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1201 amends Decision (CFSP) 2022/1093, providing an additional extension—now to 60 months—to complete equipment delivery to the Moldovan Armed Forces under the European Peace Facility. This responds to delays affecting project completion.
Council Decisions extend support for operational effectiveness and investigative capacity at OPCW
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1222 extends by five months the support period from Decision (CFSP) 2023/1344 for enhancing OPCW's operational effectiveness, referencing its increased workload in Syria, Ukraine, and Sudan. Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/1223 amends Decision (CFSP) 2024/1984, allowing a 12-month extension for institutional transitional planning and investigative activities at OPCW, with expanded cooperation arising from changes in Syria and other conflicts.

SEDE discusses hybrid threats and follow-up on new systems of warfare
On 3 June 2026, the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) held deliberations on hybrid warfare and protection of EU critical infrastructure. Rapporteur Rasa Juknevičienė (PPE) presented the draft report on the subject. The committee also examined the European Commission's follow-up on drones and defence adaptation with DG DEFIS and DG CNECT, plus reviewed debriefs on the EU-Canada Security and Defence Partnership and NATO Parliamentary Assembly missions.
