EU-Mexico Summit focuses on cultural heritage and cooperation
At the EU-Mexico Summit on 21 May 2026, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the significance of cultural exchanges, referencing meetings with Indigenous women at Mexico's Museum of Anthropology. President von der Leyen opens EU-Mexico Summit with remarks on transatlantic artistic dialogue
In her opening remarks at the 8th EU-Mexico Summit on 21 May 2026, President von der Leyen highlighted the influence of Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s years in Europe and the reciprocal inspiration between Europe and Mexico. She referenced the role of muralism and the spread of artistic movements across the Atlantic as part of a broader narrative of mutual cultural enrichment. The summit agenda included modernising the EU-Mexico Global Agreement and fostering stronger cultural and economic partnership. Von der Leyen stated the aim to build a strategic partnership for a new era, rooted in shared history and contemporary challenges.

Council Decision (EU) 2026/1138 authorises negotiations for EU membership in the Council of Europe Development Bank
Council Decision (EU) 2026/1138 of 18 May 2026, published in OJ L, authorises the opening of negotiations between the Union and the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) on the conditions for the Union’s membership. The decision, based on Articles 175 and 212 TFEU, instructs the Commission to act as negotiator, with consultation of the Working Party of Financial Counsellors. The CEB focuses on social policy and infrastructure, including cultural facilities, affordable housing, and refugee integration. Joining the CEB is intended to align the Bank’s priorities with those of the EU, notably in social and cultural cohesion.

General Affairs Council to discuss Multiannual Financial Framework and EU-UK relations
At the General Affairs Council of 26 May 2026, ministers will prepare for the June European Council and hold a policy debate on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028–2034. The agenda also includes a discussion of EU-UK relations and an annual rule of law dialogue focusing on France, Croatia, Italy, and Latvia.

CULT Committee MEPs convene in Tromsø, the European Youth Capital 2026
A delegation of the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) visited Tromsø, Norway, the 2026 European Youth Capital, on 22 May 2026. JURI Committee MEPs head to the US for talks on digital policy and copyright
On 26 May 2026, five members and the Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) will commence a three-day visit to Washington and Boston. The delegation will discuss digital regulation, copyright, and generative artificial intelligence with US legislative and regulatory bodies, including the US Chamber of Commerce and the US Patent and Trademark Office.
