Canada Announces $50 Million for Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network

On August 26, Minister Mélanie Joly detailed a $50 million federal investment in the Canadian Agri-Food Automation and Intelligence Network (CAAIN), funded through the Strategic Response Fund. The new support aims to accelerate technology development, demonstration, and commercialization across Canada’s agri-food sector. CAAIN will use the funds to expand its national network of smart farms and farm demonstration sites and anticipates supporting at least 40 new technology projects. This investment is projected to mobilize $80 million in private sector co-investment, create or maintain 800 jobs, and raise CAAIN’s membership above 3,000. The government expects these efforts to improve sector-wide innovation capacity and contribute to national food security objectives by strengthening domestic production and supply chains.

Canada Imposes Counter-Tariffs and Announces $7.5 Billion Support in Response to New U.S. Tariffs

Following the United States’ imposition of a 50 percent tariff on $27.6 billion of Canadian goods, Canada suspended trade negotiations and will deploy dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs effective September 8, matching U.S. rates (15, 25, and 50 percent) on a similar value of U.S. imports. Affected sectors include steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, and food products. Secretary of State Wayne Long, meeting with workers at Forbes Dairy Farm in Sarnia, outlined a $7.5 billion package of support for impacted businesses and workers. The measures include: a $1.5 billion Regional Tariff Response Initiative, $500 million in new BDC liquidity, a $2 billion Strong Diversification Fund for shovel-ready capital maintenance, $3.5 billion in worker and employer supports (including enhanced EI and a Worker Retention and Retraining Program), and changes to facilitate access to large enterprise loans. These policies are designed to address immediate risks to the agri-food sector’s exports, input costs, and workforce.

Commissioner of Competition Challenges Nortera Foods’ Acquisition of B&G Foods Canada Assets

On August 28, the Commissioner of Competition filed an application with the Competition Tribunal seeking to prevent Nortera Foods Inc. from acquiring most assets of B&G Foods Canada, ULC, including the Green Giant and Le Sieur business lines. The application cites section 92 of the Competition Act and seeks an order to block the acquisition, plus associated costs. Interested parties may file for leave to intervene by October 15. The action raises the prospect of heightened federal scrutiny for significant food processing and product consolidation.

Canada Supports Indigenous-Led Reindeer Herd Agribusiness Initiative in NWT

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is providing up to $885,225 to the Inuvialuit Community Economic Development Organization (ICEDO) under the Canadian Agricultural Strategic Priorities Program, announced August 27 in Inuvik. The grant funds a strategic plan to transition the Mackenzie Delta reindeer herd from a community food security model to a commercial agribusiness, focusing on workforce development, infrastructure investment, and market expansion. ICEDO will integrate traditional Inuvialuit practices with modern technologies to develop a remote and culturally significant Northern agriculture opportunity.

Manitoba and Canada Extend AgriStability Program Flexibility for Alberta Producers

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in partnership with Alberta’s provincial government, has expanded the AgriStability program for producers facing continued wet conditions. Alberta will allow late sign-ups for 2026 participation (deadline October 1), and increase the interim payment rate to 75 percent of estimated benefits. The changes are designed to improve cash flow and risk management for grain and livestock producers affected by weather-related disruptions.

Federal Funding for Expansion of Renewable Natural Gas Facility in Ontario

Natural Resources Canada on August 24 committed nearly $19 million to StormFisher Environmental Ltd. (Generate Upcycle subsidiary) to expand its London, Ontario anaerobic digestion facility. The expansion will enable annual production of an additional 450,000 GJ of renewable natural gas and 86,000 tonnes of organic fertilizer processed from municipal and industrial food waste. The increased production capacity will be available to farms in Southwestern Ontario, advancing organic waste management, low-carbon fuel production, and local agri-food input availability.

Canada and Treaty 4/6 First Nations Conclude Agricultural Benefits Settlements

On August 25, Minister Rebecca Alty signed agreements providing more than $209.5 million in compensation to Muskeg Lake Cree Nation and The Key First Nation in Saskatchewan, resolving long-standing agricultural benefits claims under Treaties 4 and 6. These settlements address past failures to supply farming resources such as livestock, seed, and equipment, and represent a significant payout in acknowledgment of unfulfilled federal commitments to First Nations agricultural development.

Federal Support for Innovative Crowdfunding by Quebec Start-Ups

The Government of Canada will provide $700,000 in non-repayable funding to La Ruche Solution de Financement. Announced by Minister Mélanie Joly, the support will seed a matching fund for crowdfunding campaigns run by Quebec-based start-ups, matching public contributions up to $50,000. Federal Investment Expands High-Speed Internet in Rural and Indigenous Ontario Communities

On August 24, Parliamentary Secretary Pauline Rochefort announced an $8.3 million investment to extend high-speed Internet access to up to 822 households, including 621 Indigenous homes, in five remote and Indigenous communities. Livestock and Dairy Data: Second Quarter 2026 and Mid-Year Inventories Released

Statistics Canada’s mid-year livestock estimates (as of July 1, 2026) report that national inventories of cattle, hogs, and sheep have increased compared to the same period in 2025. Additionally, the second quarter dairy statistics are now available, providing current benchmarks for farm production, processing volumes, and regional supply data. These datasets offer insight into herd trends and sector output heading into the second half of the year.

Wholesale Trade Advance Data: July 2026 Decline Driven by Agricultural Supplies

Advance figures from Statistics Canada for July 2026 show that wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, grain, and oilseed) decreased by 0.6%. The contraction was most notable in the agricultural supplies and minerals segments of the miscellaneous subsector. These results signal short-term pressure in the agricultural input supply chain and related wholesale categories.
