FPT Ministers Advance Next Policy Framework for Agriculture

On July 17, Ministers of Agriculture from federal, provincial, and territorial governments concluded their annual conference in Halifax, issuing the Halifax Statement to guide the Next Policy Framework (2028–2033). The Statement aims to foster economic growth, competitiveness, market diversification, and research-driven innovation in the sector. Discussions included ongoing negotiations for a renewed policy framework and reviewed progress under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP). Ministers agreed in principle to adjust AgriStability provisions for non-arm’s-length labour and contract work, with a decision targeted for the 2027 program year. Consideration of an increase to the AgriStability payment cap is on the table for the next framework. The conference featured panels on mixed farming and agri-food competitiveness, and addressed the importance of federal amendments to the Pest Control Products Act and enhancements to the Office of the Grocery Code of Conduct, with the first implementation review due in January 2027. Ted McKinney, CEO of NASDA, presented perspectives on integration between Canadian and US agriculture sectors within CUSMA. Minister MacDonald Announces Science-Based Feed Ban Amendments for Canadian Cattle Sector

On July 13, Minister Heath MacDonald announced that the CFIA has pre-published proposed amendments to the Enhanced Feed Ban in Canada Gazette Part I. The amendments seek harmonization with US regulations, revising certain specified risk material (SRM) provisions. While high-risk SRMs remain prohibited in food and ruminant feed, lower-risk SRMs may be permitted in non-ruminant feed, fertilizer, and pet food. These updates maintain Canada’s science-backed controls without increasing BSE risk as existing safeguards continue. The changes are expected to reduce waste and costs for cattle processors, supporting sector competitiveness. Interested parties are invited to comment by September 9, 2026, through CFIA’s open consultation.

Pilot Project to Increase Cattle Slaughter Capacity in Abitibi-Témiscamingue

EMILI Marks 10 Years with $3.5M Federal Investment in AgTech

At EMILI Field Day in Grosse Isle, Manitoba, Prairies Economic Development Canada announced $3.5 million for the Enterprise Machine Intelligence and Learning Initiative (EMILI). Government of Canada and Saskatchewan Collaborate on Indian Head and Scott Research Farms
