Health Canada Approves Drone Use for Pesticide Application

On June 30, 2026, Health Canada implemented a policy permitting the use of drone technology for applying pest management products previously approved for conventional aerial methods. This move enables farmers to deploy Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems for more precise, lower-altitude applications, reducing fuel use and operational costs. The policy was informed by collaborative evidence gathering between industry, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and Health Canada. Alignment with international peers, such as Australia and Japan, positions Canada competitively as drone adoption expands. Health Canada will continue adapting regulations as technology develops, aiming to balance innovation with regulatory protections.

National Food Security Strategy Announced Across Canada

Several federal officials traversed the country between June 29 and June 30 to detail Canada’s new National Food Security Strategy, supported by over $3 billion in funding over ten years. Secretary of State Ruby Sahota, Secretary of State Buckley Belanger, Parliamentary Secretary Leslie Church, Secretary of State Randeep Sarai, and Secretary of State Stephen Fuhr presented the strategy in Ontario, Saskatchewan, Toronto, Surrey, and Kelowna respectively. The initiative features: a $1 billion investment in food infrastructure, bolstering independent grocers and expanding terminals; a $1 billion Agri-food Project Finance Fund and $150 million Food Security Fund for domestic production; $750 million to expand year-round fruits and vegetables via greenhouses and vertical farms; and regulatory modernisation intended to reduce burdens across supply chains. The Local Food Infrastructure Fund’s Community Support Stream will distribute $20 million to food organisations, including a $100,000 grant to Central Okanagan Food Bank. These efforts are intended to foster domestic processing and facilitate provincial-to-federal compliance for greater interprovincial market access.

CFIA Proposes Amendments to Support Interprovincial Meat Trade

On July 2, 2026, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced proposed, time-limited amendments to the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations. The changes are designed to reduce barriers for moving red meat between provinces where slaughter capacity falls short, responding to challenges faced by small-scale producers. CFIA’s proposal allows targeted, low-volume exemptions with provincial oversight, aiming to improve access and test interprovincial markets ahead of possible federal licensing. Regulatory safeguards uphold food safety and traceability, while revisions also remove work shift requirements from SFCR and clarify stakeholder obligations. The consultation period is open until August 26, 2026, with feedback invited via the Canada Gazette.
