Ontario agri-food innovation receives major funding boost

On May 14, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Government of Ontario announced a nearly $1 million investment via the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) to advance local agri-food projects from research to commercialization. Bioenterprise Canada Corporation will administer the Ontario Agri-food Research Initiative (OAFRI) Commercialization stream, supporting Ontario-based organizations including those expanding digital biosecurity tech for pig and poultry farms, cattle health monitoring systems, dairy-free frozen dessert manufacturing, and advanced propagation tools. Sustainable CAP represents a five-year, $3.5 billion joint federal-provincial-territorial commitment, with $1 billion in federal and $2.5 billion in shared programs. The support aims to accelerate commercialization and equip farmers and processors with modern technologies to maintain sector competitiveness and resilience.

Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food embarks on Saskatchewan outreach

The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, will begin a two-day outreach mission to Saskatchewan on May 19 and 20. The itinerary includes visits to the University of Saskatchewan, Western College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Organization in Saskatoon, as well as site consultations at K+S Potash. In Regina, the Minister will attend the ribbon-cutting at the Cargill Regina Canola Processing Facility and hold meetings with his provincial counterpart, David Marit, and other industry leaders. This visit is focused on direct engagement with research, processing, and producer stakeholders in Saskatchewan.

CFIA urges vigilance on plant biosecurity

Coinciding with International Day of Plant Health on May 12, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) provided updated guidance on protecting plant health amid threats from invasive pests. Plants account for 98% of the oxygen produced and 80% of the food consumed in Canada, contributing over $150 billion to national GDP. The CFIA’s approach includes regulation, border controls, surveillance, quarantine, public education, and scientific risk assessment. The notice reiterated strict controls on imports, advised industry to follow established crop biosecurity standards, and reminded stakeholders to report unfamiliar pests or signs of disease. CFIA maintains that strong biosecurity underpins trade continuity and ecosystem stability.

New StatsCan dashboard: Rural employment by industry

Statistics Canada released updated April 2026 data for the Interactive Dashboard on Employment by Industry in Rural Canada. The resource provides industry professionals with real-time, segmented statistics regarding rural workforce participation across primary sectors, including agriculture and agri-food. The dashboard permits granular analysis of employment trends, aiding policy and operational planning.

Milled wheat and flour output increases in 2025

Statistics Canada data show Canadian millers processed 3.4 million tonnes of wheat in 2025, a 4.1% increase over 2024. Flour production similarly rose, reaching 2.7 million tonnes—a year-over-year increase of 7.7%. The data also include comparable figures for the United States and reflect ongoing trends in grain processing capacity and demand.

FedNor funds advances in Rainy River agri-business

On May 15, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) announced a $558,139 commitment to four economic projects in Rainy River district. Key agri-food allocations include $302,220 for Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association to upgrade regional sales barn facilities and logistics. Rainy River Grain Company Ltd. receives $150,000 for equipment expansion to enhance service and repair capacity, alongside $48,419 for a crop scale installation to speed up harvest logistics and reduce vehicle emissions. A separate $57,500 will support Grand Council Treaty #3 in commissioning a youth economic development internship. These targeted allocations address operational efficiency and value chain improvements for more than 200 local farms.

Atlantic Canada agri-food innovation supported through targeted investments

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) on May 11 announced investments targeting food ingredient and packaging startups. RFINE Biomass Solutions Inc. in Halifax will use $50,000 to hire a food scientist advancing products from spent coffee grounds. The Halifax Honey Company, awarded $33,750, is scaling production capacity. Greenii Inc. receives a $27,500 loan for manufacturing upgrades to support eco-friendly packaging, and Pricing for Profit Inc. was awarded $50,000 for technology upgrades and marketing expansion. These measures are intended to drive growth in value-added agri-food exports and improve access to regulated markets for Atlantic firms.

Northern innovation funding reaches agri-food and resource initiatives

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is distributing nearly $490,000 among four northern economic development projects. Recipients include Dechinta Initiatives for research on northern co-operatives in the Northwest Territories, Arctic 360 for pan-territorial infrastructure mapping, Baffin Phones Inc. for a new Inuit-art branded phone case, and the Village of Carmacks, Yukon, which will apply $50,000 toward planning a biogas-fueled waste management system. The Carmacks project is designed to convert local organic waste into renewable energy and fertilizer, with projections of offsetting roughly 19,600 litres of diesel annually and creating $120,000 in annual economic value.

Saskatchewan agriculture scholarships awarded for industry leadership

Four students from Saskatchewan received Agriculture Student Scholarships funded by Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. Carson Green of Mossbank earned the $6,000 grand prize for addressing labour needs in the agricultural sector, while runners-up Brianna Yung, Eva Schafer, and Marshall Mann were each granted $3,000.
