Canada Announces Modernization of Research Support System

On October 16, 2024, Ministers François-Philippe Champagne and Mark Holland announced the release of an engagement report on modernizing Canada's research support system. This initiative, outlined in Budget 2024, includes establishing a new capstone research funding organization. The existing granting councils like NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR will continue under this new framework, aiming for more collaboration and agility in supporting diverse science disciplines. The government has allocated significant funding, including $825 million over five years to support students and post-doctoral fellows, and $1.8 billion for core research grants. This modernization effort is informed by an independent advisory panel and aims to incorporate perspectives from Indigenous communities and other stakeholders.
