Fisheries Act Amendments Impact Effluent Regulations
The recent amendments to the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations under the Fisheries Act will impact fish habitats. Specifically, the expansion of the existing NTSF will destroy 0.46 ha of fish habitat, but a Fish Habitat Compensation Plan (FHCP) will create 0.89 ha of new habitat. The amendments, costing Agnico Eagle Mines Limited $1.37 million, align with DFO’s policies to offset adverse effects on fish habitats. Monitoring by the Government of Canada will ensure compliance, with costs anticipated to be low due to intermittent enforcement.
