Government of Canada and Gitanyow Nation Sign Incremental Fisheries Reconciliation Agreement

On August 31, Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson and Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty formalized a 10-year fisheries reconciliation agreement with the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs in northwestern British Columbia. The agreement expands the Gitanyow Fisheries Authority’s capacity to conduct stewardship initiatives, notably the Kitwanga Sockeye Recovery Program. It sets a framework for shared management of Gitanyow fisheries resources, joint initiatives on salmon conservation and recovery, and information sharing among interested parties. Participation in commercial fishing opportunities under this agreement will affect economic activities for regional Indigenous fisheries and builds on Canada’s stated approach for cooperative salmon management. The federal government describes this as a Nation-to-Nation agreement aligned with ongoing commitments regarding Indigenous rights and fisheries governance.

$14 Million in Federal Support for Modernization Projects in Nova Scotia Seafood and Aquaculture Sectors

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) announced on September 2 that 19 Nova Scotia businesses will share $14 million in federal non-repayable funds for production modernization, with several focused on seafood processing, aquaculture, and related supply chains. Lobster Hub Inc. will receive $994,700 to add new processing capacity, advancing value-added lobster product lines while modernizing and reducing waste. Victoria Co-operative Fisheries Limited receives $500,000 for updating snow crab and lobster operations to improve yield, quality, and competitiveness. Deep Cove Aqua Farms Limited has been allotted $420,900 for an automated lobster holding system upgrade to improve operational efficiency and cost structure. Inventive Marine Products Limited will expand metal fabrication and contract manufacturing, and SeaChange Biochemistry Inc. plans to enhance branded seafood exports. These investments include automation, new equipment, enhanced export readiness, and support for workforce development across the sector.

Government of Canada Invests $11 Million to Support Businesses and Seafood Supply Chain in Northern B.C.

On September 4, Pacific Economic Development Canada announced more than $11 million for ten entities in Northern B.C. Among the recipients is Great Glacier Salmon of Prince Rupert, which will receive funds to upgrade salmon processing and loading, as well as modify a transport vessel to establish new Canadian distribution channels for wild salmon. Other investments include support for advanced manufacturing, forestry, and local port infrastructure expansion. The program targets key industries facing global trade issues, with direct implications for seafood logistics, trade flows, and supply chain robustness. The BCAFN will use new funding to open a Centre of Excellence supporting Indigenous economic participation, and the Indigenous Food Sovereignty Association will build a trades training centre focused on food security and business opportunity expansion in rural and remote communities.

Canada Announces $3.6 Million for Small-Scale Fisheries in Pacific Island Countries

On September 4, the Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State for International Development, concluded Canada’s participation at the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, revealing $13 million for three regional development projects. Among them, $3.6 million will fund the second phase of ‘Strengthening Small-Scale Fisheries’ in Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The initiative aims to boost fisheries management in coastal communities and enhance adaptation to the impacts of economic pressures and environmental disruption. The funding shapes Canada’s engagement strategy in the Indo-Pacific, including opportunities for seafood trade and fisheries management collaboration.
