Canada Unveils National Automotive Strategy and Major EV Infrastructure Expansion
On February 10, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson, Minister of Transport Steven MacKinnon, and Minister of Environment Julie Dabrusin announced over $97 million for 155 projects supporting clean transportation under the newly launched Automotive Strategy. This includes $84.4 million to install more than 8,000 electric vehicle chargers nationwide through the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, an addition that brings the national total above 30,000 public EV chargers. Further, $5.7 million is allocated to the Green Freight Program for low-carbon fleet upgrades and fuel-saving initiatives, and $7.2 million will fund 30 educational projects—11 led by Indigenous groups—to increase EV and clean fuels awareness. The federal government also committed to a new five-year Electric Vehicle Affordability Program and announced development of a National Charging Infrastructure Strategy, leveraging $1.5 billion from the Canada Infrastructure Bank for charging and hydrogen refueling. These measures aim to attract private sector investment and grow the domestic EV supply chain.
