Canada Breaks Ground on North Coast Transmission Line, Doubling West Coast Clean Power

On September 3, Natural Resources Canada commenced construction on Phase 1 of the North Coast Transmission Line (NCTL), expanding transmission from Prince George to Terrace, B.C. The project, supported under the Canada–British Columbia Co-operative Prosperity Agreement and through collaborative Indigenous participation, is set to more than double clean electricity availability along the West Coast. The NCTL is expected to unlock industrial developments such as the Ksi Lisims LNG facility and critical minerals projects in the Golden Triangle, generating an anticipated $10 billion in economic activity and creating nearly 10,000 jobs. Emissions reductions from the line are projected to reach up to three million tonnes annually, equivalent to removing one million vehicles from Canadian roads each year. The initiative moved from regulatory approval to construction following its designation by the Major Projects Office in November 2025. Federal–provincial and Indigenous coordination allowed for accelerated development aimed at long-term energy reliability and grid expansion.

Minister Hajdu Establishes the Energy & Electricity Workforce Alliance

Minister Patty Hajdu announced on September 2 the launch of the Energy and Electricity Workforce Alliance. The coalition includes key stakeholders such as Electricity Human Resources Canada, the Energy Council of Canada, and the Canadian Renewable Energy Association. The Alliance is tasked with developing partnerships across industry, labour, and educational institutions to address critical skills gaps in energy and electricity occupations, including heavy-duty mechanics and industrial technicians. Areas of focus include reskilling, regional labour mobility, and the adoption of technologies like artificial intelligence and advanced renewable systems. The goal is to align workforce solutions with investments in electrification, grid modernization, and sector expansion, especially as projects in liquefied natural gas, hydro, wind, solar, and nuclear power scale up nationwide.

Government of Canada Releases New Climate Report to Support Resilience and Grid Planning

Environment and Climate Change Canada published its five-year scientific assessment, 'Canada’s Changing Climate Report 2026,' on September 3. The report targets the integration of climate change considerations in planning, notably for electricity and infrastructure resilience. Key government actions in the past year included investment in clean energy projects—such as the Churchill Falls expansion and the North Coast Transmission Line—underpinning efforts to achieve net-zero by 2050. Canada has pledged $13 billion in international climate finance through 2031 and committed over $2.1 billion nationally for adaptation. Budget 2025 launched community and youth infrastructure programs to advance these objectives. Federal Government Invests in School Bus Electrification via Zero Emission Transit Fund

Federal Funding for AI-Enabled Asset Management Platform to Support Infrastructure Planning

Prairies Economic Development Canada announced on September 3 repayable funding of $980,000 for Regina-based Asset Strategy Inc. (ASI Engineering) to develop a cloud-based asset management platform. The ASI Software leverages AI-enabled tools for municipalities to monitor infrastructure assets, visualize budgets, and anticipate future funding gaps. With this investment, the government intends for public and private entities to have greater access to data for efficient planning of maintenance, upgrade, and expansion of vital utilities and energy infrastructure.

StatsCan Reports Increase in Canadian Primary Energy Production for June 2026

Statistics Canada’s August 31 release showed primary energy production rose 5.9% in June 2026 compared to the same month last year, reaching two million gigajoules.
