Federal Government Invests Over $1 Million in Indigenous-Led Clean Energy in Northwestern Ontario

The Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor) has confirmed a $1,129,183 federal investment in Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek to build a district biomass heating system. The new infrastructure replaces reliance on diesel-powered generators with a renewable, wood residue-based solution, using local sawmill byproducts. This newest allocation includes $669,383 in funding, expanding on $459,800 previously announced in December 2025. The project is supported through the Northern Ontario Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (NOICE) and will provide reliable heat across community buildings, offering infrastructure that aligns with local economic priorities. The biomass system is intended to help advance regional self-determination, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and support long-term electricity grid resilience in northern communities.

Canada Invests Nearly $5 Million to Link Quebec Critical Minerals to Market

Natural Resources Canada announced close to $5 million under the First and Last Mile Fund for pre-development work on enabling infrastructure for Quebec’s Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean mining projects. The funding will help advance transmission and transportation routes required for First Phosphate’s Bégin–Lamarche phosphate mine, matched by an equivalent amount in private investment from First Phosphate. Project studies will address feasibility, environmental impacts, and engagement with Indigenous and local groups to determine optimal infrastructure. The development is expected to create about 500 construction jobs, with mine operations generating 300 permanent roles by 2029. These activities are part of Canada’s effort to bolster supply chain security in strategic materials for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage technologies.

Government of Canada Commits $10 Million to Hanon Systems for EV Compressor Facility

The Honourable Mélanie Joly announced a $10 million investment through the Strategic Response Fund to Hanon Systems for a vapour-injected electric compressor and product development plant in Vaughan, Ontario. The $198.75 million project will construct a manufacturing facility expected to reach 1.5 million e-compressor units annually by 2034. The facility is projected to create roughly 300 jobs and strengthen Canada’s EV manufacturing ecosystem. Funding aligns with the federal automotive strategy to expand domestic electric vehicle supply chains and respond to shifts in global automotive demand.

Edmonton Community Hall to Undergo Energy and Building Upgrade Backed by Federal Funding

The Sherbrooke Community League in Edmonton will receive $823,122 under the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program for retrofitting their facility. Upgrades include building envelope insulation, transition from natural gas to electric heating and cooling, a heat pump water heater, and the installation of solar features. The retrofit aims to improve energy efficiency, ensure reliable function as an emergency shelter, and maintain affordable community offerings. Accessibility features will be extended, and various interior modernizations will be implemented.

Canada Invests $20.3 Million in Quantum Defence Innovation Secure Hub in Alberta

Minister David J. McGuinty announced a $20.3 million investment to establish the Quantum Defence Innovation Secure Hub (DISH) at the University of Calgary, supporting priorities under the Defence Industrial Strategy. The Quantum DISH will facilitate collaboration between government, industry, and academia to develop operational quantum technologies for defence applications. Federal Support for $6.2 Million in Energy-Efficient Cultural Infrastructure in Nova Scotia

MP Jessica Fancy and Minister Karina Gould announced federal investment of up to $6.2 million for extensive energy, accessibility, and infrastructure upgrades at the Lunenburg Opera House under the Direct Delivery stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund. The refurbishment will improve building insulation, install high-efficiency HVAC and electrical systems, and ensure full multi-level accessibility.
