Canada and Poland reach milestone with first offshore wind project, Baltic Power

On July 10, Minister Tim Hodgson of Natural Resources Canada attended Gdansk, Poland for the completion of Baltic Power, Poland’s first major offshore wind project—a collaboration between Canada’s Northland Power and Poland’s ORLEN. With finalization of the Choczewo substation as a grid hub, Baltic Power is now poised to receive and transmit offshore wind energy inland, representing a 1.1-GW installation. When operational, Baltic Power is estimated to provide four terawatt-hours annually, sufficient for over 1.5 million homes and supplying three percent of Poland’s electricity demand. Project partners expect to avoid 2.8 million tonnes of CO2 yearly. Canadian technology, expertise and investment were central to the development, further opening opportunities for Canadian firms in global clean energy markets and strengthening economic ties with European allies. The milestone signals expanded commercial opportunities for Canadian companies and positions Canada as a competitive player in international energy security and trade.

Federal government launches Critical Minerals Accelerator with Teck Agreement

Minister Tim Hodgson of Natural Resources Canada announced the launch of the Canada Critical Minerals Accelerator (CCMA), introduced in Budget 2025, and the Strategic Investment Agreement with Teck Resources Limited. Signed in Trail, British Columbia, the agreement will support expanded production capacity at Teck’s Trail Operations, a polymetallic smelting and refining complex. The CCMA enables equity-like federal investment of up to $400 million via the Canada Growth Fund in Teck’s facility, with overall investments possibly reaching $850 million for expanded germanium and antimony output and potential new gallium production. The agreement lays groundwork for offtake rights by the federal government, helping secure domestic critical minerals supply. The Teck Trail expansion is designated a priority under B.C.’s Look West strategy and will benefit from streamlined regulatory authorizations and potential support from the B.C. Strategic Investment Fund. Federal-provincial coordination is ongoing, with a ‘Team Canada’ approach to accelerate mineral supply chain projects and reinforce Canada’s global supplier reliability.

Federal investments drive mining technology innovations in supply chain and restoration

Minister Mélanie Joly announced $6.7 million in federal support for two Canadian-led mining innovation projects valued at $19.8 million. Novamera Inc. will receive $3.8 million from DIGITAL to advance its Surgical Mining technology, utilizing subsurface imaging, AI, and robotics for precision mineral extraction, while Koonkie Canada Inc. will receive $2.9 million to develop an AI-powered platform combining environmental DNA, soil health, remote sensing, and Indigenous ecological knowledge for ecological restoration at mine sites. The initiative aims to speed development and adoption of Canadian clean technologies and build industrial competitiveness, establishing more resilient supply chains in critical minerals and improving monitoring at mining operations. The investments are expected to move solutions from development to deployment, providing commercialization opportunities and supporting sector-wide job creation.

Minister Hodgson announces Canada–Poland clean electricity project progress

Minister Tim Hodgson, Energy and Natural Resources, traveled to Gdansk, Poland for an announcement regarding notable progress on a Canada–Poland clean electricity project. Canada and Quebec governments invest in Espace+Village Community Complex in Montreal

BC Hydro launches free smart thermostat program under Power Smart 2.0

Starting July 6, BC Hydro customers statewide can register for free smart thermostats manufactured by Mysa and Sinopé, pre-enrolled in the Peak Saver program. The initiative targets electrically heated homes and forms part of BC Hydro’s $1 billion Power Smart 2.0 plan to drive energy conservation and flexible demand response, aiming for significant peak capacity savings by 2030.
