Canada Launches National Nuclear Energy Strategy

On June 22, 2026, the Government of Canada released a comprehensive Nuclear Energy Strategy in Newmarket, Ontario, with Minister Tim Hodgson stating the sector will double its workforce by 2050 and catalyze billions in private investment. The strategy outlines four pillars: enabling new reactor builds, expanding uranium production, positioning Canada as a global nuclear supplier, and supporting innovation—including small modular reactors and fusion research. Canada’s nuclear sector currently delivers 13% of grid power, supports 90,000 jobs, and adds $22 billion to the national economy annually. The Darlington New Nuclear Project, referenced by Hodgson as the first SMR in the G7, will supply power to 300,000 homes and sustain thousands of jobs. These initiatives are connected to the forthcoming National Electricity Strategy, with partnership across provinces, utilities, Indigenous groups, labor, and industry emphasized.

Federal Government Prioritizes Key Electricity Transmission Interties

On June 26, 2026, Natural Resources Canada, through Minister Tim Hodgson, announced financial and regulatory support for five priority transmission projects after the Energy and Mines Minister’s Conference. Featured projects include the BC–Yukon Grid Connect (800-km HVDC line), Alberta–BC and Alberta–Saskatchewan intertie upgrades (increasing trade capacity by 150 MW and 250 MW, respectively), expansion of the Saskatchewan–Manitoba intertie (up to 2 GW), and expanded PEI–New Brunswick sub-sea cable connections. The Transmission InterConnect Investment Strategy has been referred to the Major Projects Office to identify high-priority projects and explore financing options. Collaborative mechanisms for regional system planning and cost allocation are to be established under the new Federal-Provincial-Territorial Framework on Interties.

Modernized District Energy System in National Capital Region Launched

On June 23, Minister Joël Lightbound marked the launch of the modernized National Capital Region District Energy System at Gatineau, Quebec. Delivered via a $3.4-billion public-private partnership, the system supplies heating and cooling across federal and non-federal buildings in Ottawa and Gatineau, replacing steam with low-temperature hot water and electric chillers. The transformation improves energy efficiency, reliability, and greenhouse gas reduction, aligning with the Energy Services Acquisition Program. The project, operated with Innovate Energy, is designed to allow future building connections and uses primarily low-carbon electricity complemented by natural gas for peak loads.

Minister Hodgson Advances Energy, Mining, and Grid Security at EMMC 2026

During the Energy and Mine Ministers’ Conference in Yellowknife, Minister Hodgson announced several measures, including $16 million for clean energy infrastructure in BC, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. Federal, provincial, and territorial ministers agreed on urgent actions to improve domestic energy availability, address infrastructure vulnerabilities, expand interties, biofuels production, and bolster information sharing for emergency responses. Federal Investments in Clean Electricity in British Columbia, Yukon, and Northwest Territories

On June 23, Minister Hodgson announced over $16 million in federal funding for five clean energy infrastructure projects. These include deployment of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) across NWT and Yukon, energy feasibility studies in Okanagan-Similkameen, and development grants for the Helhts’i Power Project (200-MW wind farm, Saik’uz First Nation) and Metlakatla Mount Hays Wind Project (40-MW wind farm, Metlakatla Development Corporation). Funding comes via the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program to reduce reliance on diesel, strengthen grid security, and enable Indigenous ownership.

Canada Invests in Energy Innovation and Efficiency Projects in Alberta

Parliamentary Secretary Corey Hogan announced $19.4 million to 13 projects in Alberta on June 25, aiming to advance industrial energy efficiency and innovation. Investments cover implementation of energy management systems at manufacturing and natural resource facilities, ventilation retrofits, operational excellence at West Fraser Mills, hydrogen storage trials in salt formations (University of Alberta), and demonstration of vehicle-to-grid battery storage at EQUS REA. The Green Industrial Facilities and Manufacturing Program and Energy Innovation Program are key instruments supporting these efforts, with the goal of bolstering grid reliability and clean energy integration.

Canada Funds First-of-its-Kind Microgrid Project in Northern Manitoba

On June 22, the Honourable Rebecca Chartrand announced $21.6 million for a First Nation-led renewable microgrid initiative in Sayisi Dene First Nation, Tadoule Lake, Manitoba. The project integrates bifacial solar PV, battery storage, and microgrid controllers to reduce diesel use and is expected to cut emissions by 500 tonnes of CO2 annually after commissioning in autumn. The initiative centers on local ownership and grid modernization in remote northern communities.

Canada Invests $17.2 Million in Clean Energy Projects in Nunavut
