Canada Secures its First Long-Term European LNG Export Deal
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson announced a signed offtake agreement between Ksi Lisims LNG and Germany's Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE), marking Canada's inaugural long-term LNG export contract with a European client. Under the deal, SEFE will purchase 1 million tonnes of LNG annually for up to 20 years, with deliveries targeted to begin in the early 2030s. The Ksi Lisims project, situated in British Columbia, brings together the Nisga’a Nation, Western LNG, and Rockies LNG Partners. It was approved under the "One Project, One Review" process and then referred to the Major Projects Office (MPO) in November 2025, with construction and operational jobs expected to total in the thousands. The facility, after full electrification, aims to achieve emissions 94% below the global LNG average, leveraging hydropower supplied via the planned North Coast Transmission Line. This project is expected to attract $30 billion in investment and contribute over $15 billion to national GDP over 30 years.

Ksi Lisims LNG: Details on MPO Referral and Path Forward
At a May 27 event in Vancouver, Minister Tim Hodgson delivered remarks documenting the federal government's reasons for referring the Ksi Lisims LNG facility to the Major Projects Office. The project, led by the Nisg̱a’a Nation with Western LNG and Rockies LNG, was cited for its transformative economic potential, Indigenous ownership, and anticipated $30 billion in investment. Approval for the project advanced under the "One Project, One Review" agreement between federal and British Columbia authorities. The Minister described the deal with SEFE as an outcome of the August 2025 trade mission to Germany. The facility is designed for grid connection to utilize British Columbia's clean electricity, and the announcement detailed plans to supply zero-carbon electricity to the floating terminal. Two additional LNG terminals—Woodfibre LNG and Cedar LNG—were also referenced as examples of new models for Indigenous partnership and low-carbon LNG infrastructure now advancing in British Columbia.
