Bureau of Indian Education Proposes Revision of Data Collection for Bureau-Funded Schools
The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) has submitted a proposed renewal and revision of 'Data Elements for Bureau-Funded Schools' under the Paperwork Reduction Act, aiming to enhance data collection used to determine student eligibility and assess educational and residential needs across federally recognized Indian and Alaska Native communities. Public comments are invited through the OIRA website until September 28, 2026. The National Indian Education Association submitted recommendations during the previous comment period regarding tribal data ownership, cultural measures, and data transparency. BIE responded by referencing its compliance with student confidentiality regulations and its use of the Native American Student Information System. The revised collection estimates 48,000 annual respondents and 12,000 total burden hours.

Inventory Completion: Office of the State Archaeologist, University of Iowa, IA
The Office of the State Archaeologist at the University of Iowa completed an inventory under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), identifying the remains of an adult male that originated from Trumbull Lake in Iowa, following their discovery at the Okoboji Antique Mall. Affiliation was established with multiple Native American tribes including the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Ho-Chunk Nation, Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska, and others. Repatriation may occur on or after September 23, 2026, pending requests and validation among parties.

Notice of Inventory Completion: Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology, Andover, MA
The Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology announced the completion of inventory under NAGPRA for human remains acquired in the early 20th century from Arkansas, now confirmed to be affiliated with the Quapaw Nation. The Institute invites written requests for repatriation until at least September 23, 2026, after which competing requests will be evaluated. Notifications will be sent to the Quapaw Nation and other consulting parties as per regulatory provisions.

Notice of Inventory Completion: Iliff School of Theology, Denver, CO
Iliff School of Theology has completed an inventory under NAGPRA for human remains and a funerary object—a Latin book previously bound with Lenape skin. Acquisition history traces to David Morgan's actions in 1779, and the book was handed down to the School in Denver in 1893. The affiliation has been established with Delaware Nation, Delaware Tribe of Indians, and the Stockbridge Munsee Community. Repatriation is scheduled on or after September 23, 2026.

Notice of Intended Repatriation: University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND
The University of North Dakota intends to repatriate 121,218 unassociated funerary objects from Dunn County, North Dakota, to the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Fort Berthold Reservation. Recovery documentation confirms the absence of hazardous treatments. Requests for repatriation from affiliated or descendant groups may be submitted prior to September 23, 2026.
