Second Phase of Federal Labour Relations Consultations Launched

Employment and Social Development Canada began a targeted second round of consultations, seeking deeper feedback from unions, employers, and Indigenous partners regarding proposed amendments to the Canada Labour Code and Wage Earner Protection Program Act. Topics include reviewing Section 107 dispute resolution powers, exploring expedited grievance arbitration, addressing bad faith bargaining, evaluating mandates for strikes and lockouts, and improving processes for first collective agreements. The consultation also examines medical leave with pay, wage theft enforcement, and other potential changes in federally regulated sectors such as banking, broadcasting, transportation, and First Nations Band Councils. Input is sought via roundtables and written submissions through August 2, 2026. The "What We Heard" report from both spring and summer consultations will inform any future regulatory or legislative adjustments.

National Food Security Strategy Allocates $3 Billion Over 10 Years

The Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food launched the National Food Security Strategy, incorporating a $3 billion investment over ten years. Measures include $1 billion for food infrastructure, food terminals, and hubs to assist independent grocers, and expanded Competition Bureau powers for oversight of unfair practices. A $1 billion Agri-food Project Finance Fund and a $150 million Food Security Fund were established to boost Canadian food production and processing. The program also invests $750 million in year-round fruit and vegetable production through greenhouses and vertical farms, particularly targeting rural and northern regions. Regulatory reforms are planned to accelerate approvals of agricultural inputs, modernize supply chains, and ease interprovincial market access for food businesses. $20 million is allocated to community food organizations, including $100,000 for the Central Okanagan Food Bank. Senior officials representing multiple ministries announced the strategy in several provinces, emphasizing competitive grocery sector expansion and enhanced domestic food security.

Canada Supports Humanitarian Response to Venezuelan Earthquakes

Global Affairs Canada announced a disaster-response matching fund for donations to the Canadian Red Cross and Humanitarian Coalition supporting urgent earthquake relief in Venezuela. Donations from June 25 to July 14 will be matched up to $4 million, supplementing $5 million in previously committed federal aid—$2 million to the World Food Programme, $2 million to the Pan American Health Organization, and $1 million to the International Rescue Committee. Emergency items have been delivered, such as blankets, mosquito nets, and medical supplies, and over 5,700 relief kits have reached affected communities. Federal Investment in Regional Wastewater Infrastructure

Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada invested over $5.8 million in expanding the East Selkirk Wastewater Treatment Lagoon in Manitoba.
