Commission Proposes European Day in Remembrance of Victims of Accidents at Work
On 6 August, Executive Vice-President Natalia-Elena Mînzatu issued a statement announcing the Commission’s proposal to establish 8 August as the annual European Day in Remembrance of Victims of Accidents at Work, in connection with the 70th anniversary of the Marcinelle mining disaster. The day is intended both as an act of remembrance for the 262 workers of 12 nationalities who died in 1956 and as a renewed EU commitment to accident prevention. The initiative comes in response to calls from the European Parliament and several Member States. The Commission’s strategic framework for health and safety at work remains focused on mitigation of workplace risks, prioritisation of updates to EU rules on hazardous chemicals, and a 'vision zero' approach to eliminate work-related deaths. More than 3,000 EU workers die annually in occupational accidents, with over 170,000 estimated deaths from work-related illness. Mînzatu called for involvement from Member States, social partners, and citizens in shaping the new commemorative day.

Council Extends Temporary Protection for Displaced Ukrainians Until 2028, Introduces New Compliance Requirement
Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1912 of 30 July 2026 extends the temporary protection introduced by Implementing Decision (EU) 2022/382 until 4 March 2028 for persons displaced from Ukraine. The extension maintains residence rights but introduces, from 31 July 2026, a requirement that new beneficiaries present proof of compliance with Ukrainian military obligations. The Decision does not alter the situation of people who secured temporary protection before the entry into force and who continuously hold that status. Member States are instructed to regularly update the Temporary Protection Registration Platform.
Commission Rejects Registration of 'Save Europe Act' Citizens’ Initiative
Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1922 of 22 July 2026 refused registration of the European citizens’ initiative entitled ‘Save Europe Act’ in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2019/788. The Commission found that the proposed generalised moratorium on non-Western immigration was discriminatory, contrary to Article 21 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, and incompatible with the values set out in Article 2 TEU. The group of organisers was represented by Eva Vlaardingerbroek and Martin Sellner.
