Competition Bureau advances review of Keyera's proposed acquisition in the natural gas liquids sector

The Competition Bureau Canada has obtained a Federal Court order supporting its ongoing investigation into Keyera Corp’s proposed acquisition of the natural gas liquids business of Plains All American Pipeline LP. Both firms hold significant midstream positions, especially in Alberta’s Fort Saskatchewan area, operating in transportation, fractionation, storage, and marketing of various natural gas liquids including ethane, propane, butane, and condensate. The Bureau’s inquiry focuses on whether this transaction could materially reduce competition within the oil and gas industry, possibly raising barriers for other market participants and reinforcing Keyera’s position in energy infrastructure. Under the court order, Inter Pipeline Ltd.—another midstream operator—must provide pertinent records to the Bureau. The assessment addresses potential impacts for competitors and new entrants as the transaction proceeds through regulatory scrutiny.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada funds low-carbon agrichemicals development

On April 7, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced up to $1.24 million in funding for Anodyne Chemistries Inc. to develop a bio-electric process converting carbon dioxide and water into formic acid and hydrogen peroxide. The project falls under the AgriScience Program – Projects Component and seeks to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce reliance on petrochemical feedstocks in Canadian agriculture. According to the announcement, these chemicals are widely used on farms for feed preservation, livestock health, and crop sanitation. Formic acid and hydrogen peroxide produced through this method could alter procurement patterns for agricultural inputs previously dominated by fossil fuel-based processes.
