Canada invests $55 million in Arctic mining infrastructure and low-emissions technology
On May 20, the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced more than $55 million in federal funding for two projects intended to strengthen Arctic infrastructure and support critical minerals supply chains. The West Kitikmeot Resources Corporation’s Grays Bay Road and Port project is conditionally approved for up to $50 million, advancing plans for a deepwater Arctic port and a 230-kilometre all-season road. This infrastructure is positioned to unlock future developments in zinc and copper mining. An additional $5 million was allocated to Glacies Technologies Inc. for a pilot project at B2Gold in Nunavut, offering a low-emissions alternative to diesel for mine ventilation and heating. These efforts build on the broader federal approach in the 2026 Spring Economic Update, which prioritizes nation-building infrastructure and Arctic sovereignty. The projects received referral from Prime Minister Carney in March, emphasizing the government’s push to diversify exports and reinforce supply chain resilience.

Agnico Eagle begins $2 billion redevelopment at Hope Bay Mine in Nunavut
Minister Tim Hodgson attended the groundbreaking for the Hope Bay Project in Nunavut on May 19. Agnico Eagle Mines Limited has approved a $2 billion investment for mine construction, with projections indicating an annual export increase of $2.6 billion and the support of nearly 2,000 jobs. The project also includes significant benefits for Indigenous organizations such as the Kitikmeot Inuit Association. To enable cleaner energy at the site, Minister Hodgson announced $25 million in federal funding for the Hope Bay Wind Project, developed by the Inuit-owned Kitikmeot Tugliq Limited Partnership. This wind and battery storage installation will decrease diesel use by 3 million litres per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 8,000 tonnes annually. In addition, a cooperation agreement was reached between the Department of National Defence and Agnico Eagle, aiming to facilitate knowledge transfer for Arctic infrastructure delivery and increase the Canadian Armed Forces’ readiness in the region.

CNSC renews Saskatchewan Research Council’s nuclear substances licence for Gunnar uranium remediations
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has renewed the Saskatchewan Research Council’s (SRC) nuclear substances and radiation devices licence for the Gunnar historic uranium mine and mill site in northern Saskatchewan until May 31, 2031. The renewal follows written submissions and a spring 2026 public hearing. The license permits SRC to continue remediation activities, finalize documentation, and prepare post-remediation monitoring plans. No new activities were authorized, as further long-term monitoring will require future hearings. The CNSC encourages stakeholders to access related submissions via its website and provides the detailed record of decision upon request.

Minister Joly announces $76.2 million federal investment for Tenaris steel modernization in Sault Ste. Marie
On May 22, Minister Mélanie Joly announced a $76.2 million investment from the Strategic Response Fund for Tenaris’s $305.9 million modernization project in Sault Ste. Marie. The funding will enable Tenaris to acquire advanced equipment, increase automation, upgrade production lines, and will support over 1,000 jobs across the facility. Tenaris plans to expand its output of tubular products for oil, gas, and industrial applications, improving domestic capacity and product diversity. The initiative further supports Canada’s energy sovereignty and enhances supply chain resilience. This follows earlier measures to shield Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper producers from US tariffs and is part of a broader strategy to reinforce the nation’s manufacturing base for critical minerals and energy infrastructure.

Government of Canada supports improved regulatory decision-making and Indigenous participation in northern major projects
On May 19, Minister Rebecca Chartrand highlighted the launch of the Northern Regulatory Initiative, which invites expressions of interest from Indigenous governments and organizations in Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The initiative compliments the federally supported Regional Database and Major Project Review Tool, which aggregates environmental, socio-economic, and project information. Eligible applicants may receive up to $500,000 over three years, enhancing their ability to participate in regulatory processes. In tandem, the federal government will invest $42 million over four years to boost regulatory system capacity, co-management boards, and collaborative partner engagement. This data-driven approach aims to improve transparency and predictability across the North's regulatory landscape.
