Ottawa commits over $100 million to infrastructure supporting critical mineral development in British Columbia
Natural Resources Canada announced, on May 11 in Burnaby, more than $100 million in funding targeting five projects across British Columbia to enhance critical minerals development and associated infrastructure. British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority will receive up to $50 million to upgrade transmission for the Highland Valley Copper Mine Life Extension Project, and a further $44.2 million to increase electricity transmission capacity for developments such as Newmont’s Red Chris and Seabridge’s KSM projects. Nano One Materials will receive up to $3 million for lithium iron phosphate research and production efforts, while Defense Metals Corp. is allocated $1.87 million to develop a 60-kilometre transmission line to the Wicheeda Rare Earth Elements site. Other allocations include $900,000 to support the Salish Sea Indigenous Guardians Association's critical minerals department within the Osoyoos Indian Band and $736,778 for Boney Creek Development Ltd. to progress pre-construction for the Anyox Hydroelectric facility. These projects position BC to further expand mineral supply chain and electrification infrastructure.

Canada Growth Fund invests up to $145 million in expansion of North American Lithium mine in Quebec
On May 12, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, announced that the Canada Growth Fund will deploy up to C$145 million to expand North American Lithium (NAL), operated by Elevra Lithium Limited in Quebec’s Abitibi region. The investment aims to lift output, reduce costs, and reinforce the supply chain for North American lithium serving rechargeable battery markets. The staged brownfield expansion is expected to maintain approximately 252 jobs. The federal statement depicts the move as advancing Canadian production of battery metals and supporting electric vehicle and energy storage supply chains.

ArcelorMittal Exploitation Minière Canada fined $100 million under Fisheries Act for illegal effluent discharges
Environment and Climate Change Canada announced on May 15 that ArcelorMittal Exploitation Minière Canada s.e.n.c. (AMEM) was sentenced to pay $100 million after pleading guilty to 100 counts of Fisheries Act violations. The fine follows investigations revealing illegal deposits of deleterious substances—low-pH effluents, elevated concentrations of zinc, nickel, or suspended solids, and substances toxic to fish—into waters at Mont-Wright and Fire Lake sites between 2014 and 2022. The bulk of the fine, nearly $100 million, goes to the federal Environmental Damages Fund to support ecological projects. In addition, AMEM must reimburse $250,000 for investigation costs and submit a comprehensive action plan on effluent management by February 2027.

FedNor invests over $2.2 million for North Bay-area manufacturing resilience with focus on mining supply chain
FedNor, the federal economic development agency for Northern Ontario, announced $2,229,327 in funding across five businesses in North Bay, as released on May 15. Premier Mining Products Inc. will receive $1 million to expand capacity and eliminate bottlenecks in producing mining materials. Pilot Diamond Ltd receives $969,500 for modernization and new technologies to counter cost pressures. Other recipients—Miller Technology Inc., Mincon Canada, and Old Forge Manufacturing—will use the funding to upgrade operations, enhance efficiency, and accelerate technological adoption. The support comes via the Regional Tariff Response Initiative and is focused on strengthening domestic supply chains, improving competitiveness, and fostering entry to new markets in response to global tariff and trade pressures.

Federal funding advances industrial hearing protection technologies in Newfoundland and Labrador
Audyse Technology Inc. will receive $200,000 in repayable funding through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency to further develop and commercialize its AudyseHEAR safety platform for industrial use, as outlined in a May 13 announcement. The investment is directed at enhancing worker safety for industrial sectors—including mining—with expansion to new commercial markets anticipated. The project will enable the St. John’s-based company to scale operations and improve its proprietary real-time workplace hearing protection system.

Minister Hodgson completes B.C. tour focused on major mining and energy projects in partnership with Indigenous organizations
On May 15, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, concluded a tour of energy, mining, and forestry projects in British Columbia. During the tour, the Minister met with Indigenous and industry leaders and visited sites such as the Red Chris copper mine, Brucejack, KSM, Eskay Creek, Galore Creek, and Shaft Creek mines. The visit included discussions on significant projects—LNG Canada's Phase 2, the Cedar LNG floating export terminal majority-owned by the Haisla Nation, and the expansion of Indigenous economic participation programs such as the Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program ($10 billion available as of March 2025) and the Indigenous Natural Resources Partnership Program (recently renewed with $84 million over four years). Upcoming project expansions are expected to increase copper output and jobs, as well as capital inflows and Indigenous equity and employment in the province.
