ENVI opinion proposes amendments to Regulation (EU) 2024/1252 on critical raw materials
On 29 April 2026, the Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety (ENVI) adopted an opinion on the proposal to amend Regulation (EU) 2024/1252 regarding critical raw materials (COM(2025)0946, 2025/0385(COD)). Rapporteur Jacek Ozdoba (ENVI) introduced amendments to strengthen the framework for supply security, risk preparedness, and circular economy measures. The opinion recommends diversified supply sources, improved recycling targets, and enhanced cooperation between the Commission and Member States in identifying large companies reliant on critical raw materials. The vote in ENVI was 53 in favour, 3 against, and 21 abstentions.
Parliament ready to negotiate revised exposure limits for cobalt and chemicals
On 29 April 2026, the Employment and Social Affairs Committee (EMPL) announced Parliament's readiness to negotiate the sixth revision of the carcinogens, mutagens and reprotoxic substances directive (CMRD). The revision introduces new occupational exposure limit values for cobalt and its inorganic compounds, relevant to battery production and mining. Rapporteur Liesbet Sommen (EPP, BE) confirmed the mandate includes strengthened protection measures for workers and additional requirements for employers.
