Commercial Spin-Off of Canada's Photonics Fabrication Centre Announced

On May 4, Minister Mélanie Joly announced the start of the process to spin off the National Research Council's Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) into a commercial entity. The CPFC, North America's only end-to-end pure play compound semiconductor facility, is positioned to attract private-sector capital for scaling operations. This step aims to expand domestic photonics supply chains and enhance services for Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises in AI and quantum technology sectors. Budget 2025 cited private investment as a key goal for CPFC growth, anchoring the facility in Canada and targeting advanced manufacturing, auto, defence, and aerospace industries. The CPFC's commercial transition will be structured in partnership with the Canada Development Investment Corporation, aiming to increase agility and investment capacity for rapid expansion.
