  • National Defence Committee studies Francophone and Indigenous Members of the Canadian Armed Forces: On May 4, National Defence Committee meets at 11:00 a.m. to discuss issues affecting Francophone and Indigenous members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Witnesses include Chief Warrant Officer Becky MacIsaac and Debbie Eisen from the Assembly of First Nations.
  • Environment and Sustainable Development Committee briefing on Canada's Strategy to Protect Nature: Scheduled for May 5, 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., this session will cover federal strategies for nature protection and Parks Canada priorities. Hon. Nathalie Provost and officials from multiple departments will present, including Parks Canada Vice-President Nadine Spence (Indigenous Stewardship and Cultural Heritage).
  • Senate Indigenous Peoples Committee considers Bill S-241 amendments and reports on Truth and Reconciliation: On May 6 at 6:45 p.m., the Senate Indigenous Peoples Committee will meet in camera to examine Bill S-241 (Criminal Code and Indian Act amendments) and discuss government responses on Truth, Education, and Reconciliation. Draft reports and future business agenda will be considered.

Spring Economic Update 2026 launches Team Canada Strong for skilled trades, expands student access

Minister Rebecca Chartrand met with students at Piping Industry Technical College on May 1, outlining the Spring Economic Update 2026's suite of measures to support workers and youth, including the Team Canada Strong initiative. The $6 billion program aims to recruit, train, and hire between 80,000 and 100,000 new Red Seal skilled trades workers over the next five years. Canada's fiscal position remains stable, with deficits projected lower than before. Key components include a $2 billion investment for job-ready placements, a new Build Canada Apprenticeship Service, and an expanded Labour Mobility Deduction to make skilled work more accessible across regions. Apprentices will benefit from digitized certification processes and direct financial incentives, such as a $5,000 completion bonus and up to $16,000 in total payments per apprentice. The ongoing changes are expected to support Canada's housing, infrastructure, and defence needs.

Indigenous Services Canada, Abegweit First Nation, and PEI set to sign multilateral emergency management agreement

CRTC announces new Indigenous Stream consultation under Broadband Fund and expansion of rural connectivity

Commissioner Nirmala Naidoo addressed the British Columbia Broadband Association on April 28, confirming the CRTC's ongoing consultation on a dedicated Indigenous Stream for the Broadband Fund. Supported projects aim to expand high-speed Internet and mobile services, directly benefiting more than 320 communities—including many Indigenous and remote areas—with 68 projects approved to date. Recent changes simplified application processes and lowered barriers for Indigenous applicants, emphasizing community engagement. New calls for applications seek to further bridge connectivity gaps; policy reviews are underway to expand operating expense coverage and bolster network resiliency, with final determinations expected shortly.

Sturgeon Lake First Nation opens Shirley Bighead Nihtāwiki and Ohpikihāwasowin Birthing and Childrearing Lodge

On April 29, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, in partnership with Indigenous Services Canada, celebrated the opening of a new birthing and childrearing lodge designed to accommodate Cree tradition and ceremony. The federal government has committed more than $20 million for facility construction, operations, and programming, with annual support exceeding $683,000 for birth-related services. The lodge offers mothers local access to culturally informed childbirth and childrearing support.
