New CIHR-Funded Indigenous Health Research Centre Established in Yukon

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research announced a $2.4 million investment on August 18 to establish a Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR) centre in Yukon, expanding the NEIHR program nationwide. The new centre, led by Dr. Norma Ann Shorty and based in Whitehorse, will focus on supporting community-driven health research priorities, training and mentorship, and long-term research infrastructure development among Yukon First Nations. The centre brings local governance and cultural approaches to the forefront, with an operational model grounded in Yukon First Nations knowledge systems. The project aims to foster sustainable health research capacity and extend leadership opportunities for Indigenous health researchers throughout the territory. This marks the final component needed for NEIHR's territory-wide network across Canada, impacting how post-secondary institutions and research bodies collaborate with Indigenous communities.

$99,980 Federal Grant for Université de l’Ontario français AI/Disinformation Project

On August 20 in Toronto, Chi Nguyen, MP for Spadina–Harbourfront, announced $99,980 in funding for the Université de l’Ontario français, provided through the Post-Secondary Sector and Scientific Knowledge in French Support Fund under the Action Plan for Official Languages 2023–2028. The project, titled “Désinformation/IAG: expérience immersive pour les 20-25 ans francophones au Canada,” aims to foster resilience and critical thinking among young Francophones facing disinformation in the AI era. The grant is part of a broader federal $8.5 million strategy to enhance creation and dissemination of scientific content in French. The initiative targets the development of new curriculum and resources intended for post-secondary institutions and research partners looking to address AI-driven challenges in Francophone communities.

Whitecap Dakota Nation Virtual Health Hub Secures Additional $5.4 Million

Indigenous Services Canada announced on August 20 new funding of $5.4 million for the Virtual Health Hub in Whitecap Dakota Nation, Saskatchewan, supplementing prior investment exceeding $28.2 million. The facility, expected to open in early 2027, will utilize telehealth, artificial intelligence, robotics, and emerging technologies to connect northern and remote patients with healthcare professionals. The operating model supports real-time virtual care for up to 30 communities, growing to as many as 90 communities by 2029. The project also creates partnerships with the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies and the University of Saskatchewan, offering training for Indigenous students and health professionals. Once operational, the hub will support 80 jobs, expanding educational and research opportunities in clinical technology fields.

Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation Joins Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program

On August 22, the Government of Canada designated the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) as an Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Program (ISET) agreement holder, announced by Minister Mandy Gull-Masty on behalf of Minister Patty Hajdu. Effective January 1, 2026, under the First Nations stream, the agreement grants PBCN oversight of employment and training services for its eight communities in Saskatchewan’s Treaty 6 and Treaty 10 territories. The arrangement allows locally tailored workforce programming, potentially affecting partner post-secondary institutes engaged in Indigenous education, training, and research collaborations in the region.

StatsCan Launches Integrated Health Survey and Administrative Data Files for Researchers

On August 21, Statistics Canada released new integrated data files combining the first seven cycles of the Canadian Health Measures Survey (2007–2024) with selected administrative databases. The linkage enables researchers to follow survey participants longitudinally, allowing new studies associating measured health characteristics with outcomes such as cancer incidence, hospitalizations, and mental health service utilization. These files are accessible via Statistics Canada's research data centres, expanding research capacity on public health and supporting evidence-based policy development for higher education institutions and health faculties engaged in longitudinal and population health research.
