Government of Canada invests over $168 million in Canada’s research ecosystem

On May 13, Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister Mélanie Joly, announced a federal investment exceeding $168 million to strengthen Canadian research capacity. Nearly $140 million will support 165 new and renewed Canada Research Chairs, spanning health, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. The Canada Foundation for Innovation is contributing $5.8 million through the John R. Evans Leaders Fund, targeting research infrastructure at 16 institutions. Another $23 million is provided via the New Frontiers in Research Fund’s Exploration stream for 92 interdisciplinary projects, ranging from wearable health sensors development to initiatives addressing Arctic security and decolonizing AI for health equity. The funding is aimed at enhancing research teams’ tools and expertise across sectors and enhancing talent retention in Canadian institutions.

Minister Joly announces $29M for Talent Innovation Canada to connect graduate research with industry

On May 14, Minister Mélanie Joly introduced a $29.2 million investment in Talent Innovation Canada (TICAN), a newly established national not-for-profit supporting links between graduate-level university talent and innovative Canadian businesses. TICAN will match high-growth firms with graduate, PhD, and postdoctoral talent in mobility, clean growth, biomanufacturing, and microelectronics and ICT sectors. The organization aims to advance domestic innovation, facilitate commercialization of research solutions, and grow Canadian intellectual property holdings. TICAN’s formation is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance Canada’s R&D workforce and promote scalable technologies.

Health System Impact Fellows placed in organizations to advance evidence-informed health improvements

On May 11, Minister Marjorie Michel announced nearly $4.8 million for the Health System Impact Program. This CIHR initiative embeds 42 PhD trainees and postdoctoral researchers inside health organizations across Canada—from hospitals to government agencies—allowing them to work on practical challenges such as medication safety for older adults, youth mental health in schools, heart failure medication management, and streamlining administrative processes for family physicians. Fellows receive mentorship and leadership training during their placements, supporting health policy innovation and services improvements.

CIHR invests $5.4M in Indigenous and community-led health research in Canada’s North

On May 14 in Yellowknife, Minister Rebecca Alty, on behalf of Minister Marjorie Michel, announced $5.4 million to renew patient- and community-driven health research in the Northwest Territories and Yukon through 2028, with a concurrent mention of $4.8 million for Nunavut research (2024-2029). Funding, provided via CIHR’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), supports regional research hubs (SUPPORT Units), community engagement, and Indigenous governance. Initiatives include the Hotıì ts’eeda (Tłı̨chǫ Government), Yukon University programs for Indigenous youth, and Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre’s policy initiatives in Nunavut.

Government invests nearly $490,000 to expand innovation for resilient northern economies

On May 15, CanNor disclosed nearly $490,000 supporting four projects: Dechinta Initiatives will research co-operative business models and launch a 12-student course in the Northwest Territories; Arctic 360 will create an infrastructure map for the three territories and Inuit Nunangat; Baffin Phones Inc. will introduce the 'NunaCase' phone case featuring licensed Inuit artwork, with royalties directly benefiting artists; The Village of Carmacks will design a closed-loop biogas-fuelled waste management system projected to generate $120,000 in annual value and offset diesel usage.

PacifiCan invests $17.3M to accelerate AI and quantum tech commercialization in British Columbia

On May 11, Minister Gregor Robertson announced $17.3 million in investments to support eight BC tech businesses, focusing on AI and quantum technology adoption across sectors. Recipients include Human in Motion Robotics ($3M for exoskeleton commercialization), Dream Photonics ($1.1M for pilot manufacturing optical interconnects), Musora (enhanced E-learning studio with AI features), Metaspectral (AI-powered recycling tech), Starfish Medical (AI platform for medical device design), ThisFish (AI camera systems for seafood quality), VRIFY (mineral exploration using AI), and BioConscious Technologies (diabetes management platform Endobits). The initiative aligns with the upcoming Web Summit Vancouver and includes an additional $6.6M to connect Canadian firms with global tech opportunities.

StatsCan: International arrivals to Canada increased 3.5% in April 2026

On May 11, Statistics Canada reported that international arrivals (including Canadian, US, and overseas-resident travelers) reached 4.7 million in April, marking a 3.5% increase compared to April 2025. This is the first year-over-year rise since January 2025, indicating renewed cross-border activity relevant for postsecondary institutions and student mobility.

StatsCan: Canadians highly concerned about online misinformation in 2025

A May 13 study found that 80% of Canadians encountered suspected misleading or false Internet content at least once a month during 2025. Furthermore, 61% reported being 'very concerned' or 'extremely concerned' about online misinformation, impacting trust in educational and research communications.

Renewed partnership for the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub at Carleton University

On May 14, MP Greg Fergus announced, for Minister Rechie Valdez, a renewed federal partnership with Carleton University to operate the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub. Since its launch in 2022, the Hub has developed the Black Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Map. John Nelson was named as the new executive director. The Knowledge Hub is a pillar of the Black Entrepreneurship Program, which received an additional $189 million investment in 2025, supporting research, capital flow, business advisory, and the broader federal Black Justice Strategy.

Minister Robertson marks 50 years since Habitat I, highlighting national collaboration on housing and research

On May 12, Minister Gregor Robertson issued a statement recognizing the 50th anniversary of Habitat I and reaffirming Canada's partnership with UN-Habitat. Recent efforts include the establishment of the UN-Habitat Canada Office in Montréal and collaborations with post-secondary institutions on applied housing research, policy exchange, and advancing Canadian expertise in global urban development.
