Federal Funding Expands Inclusive Sexual and Reproductive Health Services
On March 9, 2026, Senator Dr. Kristopher Wells, representing Health Minister Marjorie Michel, announced nearly $600,000 in federal investment to improve access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for underserved communities. The funding, detailed at the Positive Light Gala in Edmonton, provides $210,000 to the Association for New Canadians for a cloud-based portal enhancing SRH services for women, youth and LGBTQI+ newcomers in Newfoundland and Labrador, and over $375,000 to the Canadian Black, African and Caribbean HIV/AIDS Network to develop culturally relevant SRH learning resources for African, Caribbean, and Black youth. These projects, made possible through Health Canada’s SRH Fund, are intended to address language barriers, cultural sensitivities, and service access gaps by enabling health care providers to offer more specialized care.

Temporary Foreign Worker Program: Targeted Measures for Rural Health Employers
On March 13, the Government of Canada introduced temporary changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program for rural regions experiencing acute labor shortages, including within the health care sector. These measures, announced by Minister Patty Hajdu, allow rural employers, upon provincial or territorial request, to retain low-wage temporary foreign workers and raise the allowable share from 10% to 15% of the workforce in eligible regions. In health care, construction, and food processing, the existing 20% cap remains unchanged. The measures can be applied within two weeks of approval and run until March 31, 2027. These changes address recruitment and retention challenges in rural Canada and could affect staffing patterns in rural health care facilities.

Canada–Ontario Workforce Tariff Response Funds Skills Development for Health Sector Workers
Through a federal-provincial initiative launched March 10, 2026, the Canada–Ontario Workforce Tariff Response allocates $228.8 million over three years to help around 27,000 workers, including those in health care, adapt to global market shifts and tariffs. Programs under the Canada–Ontario Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA) enable upskilling and retraining through Ontario’s network of training programs, and include support for workers impacted by Work-Sharing agreements. The plan targets skills development and retention for staff in tariff-affected industries and extends support to high-potential sectors such as health care by offering new learning opportunities during periods of economic uncertainty.
