Federal Funding Targets Barriers to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services

On March 6, Minister Marjorie Michel announced more than $5.4 million via the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund to support five national organizations addressing gaps in sexual and reproductive health services for women and underserved groups. Abortion Care Canada, Fertility Matters Canada, the Canadian Association of Midwives, the Endometriosis Network Canada, and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada have been allocated funding ranging from $728,305 to $1.93 million. These projects will focus on developing resources and awareness for abortion care, endometriosis management, fertility services, and menopause support. Geographic isolation, stigma, and discrimination were cited as continuing obstacles. The fund aims to improve care and information accessibility nationwide.

National Engagement Begins for Men and Boys' Health Strategy

Health Canada launched an online questionnaire on March 2 to gather perspectives for the first national Men and Boys' Health Strategy, open until June 1. The strategy intends to address physical and mental health outcomes through feedback from Canadians, with the aim of reducing barriers faced by men and boys, including stigma and reluctance to seek help. Outcomes from this public engagement will shape the strategy’s scope and objectives.

Gender-Based Violence Supports Expanded through Federal Investment

Women and Gender Equality Canada announced over $4.3 million in funding for eight organizations on March 5. The investment will scale community-based initiatives that support women and families affected by violence, including survivor-centered and trauma-informed services, legal navigation for survivors, and pediatric care improvements for children at risk. Projects span provinces from Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia, with additional focus on wraparound supports for Indigenous and immigrant communities.

Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters Receives Additional Funding for Trauma-Informed Supports

On March 6, Minister Eleanor Olszewski announced $630,976 for the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters to increase capacity in supporting survivors of gender-based violence. This builds on a prior investment of $998,730 and will provide more training, facilitate data analysis, and extend survivor-centered tools to diverse communities. The project is expected to improve evidence-based service provision across the sector.

Emergency Treatment Fund Allocates Over $5 Million to Address Substance Use Crisis in Ontario

Minister Marjorie Michel issued details for over $5 million in funding through the Emergency Treatment Fund for six Ontario projects.
