Health Canada Launches Ministerial Reliance Order to Accelerate Drug Approvals

On July 15, Health Canada announced the publication of a Ministerial Reliance Order as part of ongoing efforts to make drugs and medical devices available to Canadians more quickly. The Order empowers Health Canada to expedite review of certain components of a drug submission by relying on documentation from select foreign regulators, reducing redundant administrative work, while maintaining safety, efficacy, and quality standards. In the past quarter, Health Canada authorized 537 new drugs and medical devices, including three generic versions of semaglutide, positioning Canada as the first G7 nation to do so. Initial drugs accepted under the Order are aimed at pediatric and veterinary use. Health Canada is also accepting stakeholder feedback on prioritizing the review of generic drugs manufactured in Canada, with the aim of bolstering the domestic life sciences sector and enhancing drug supply security. These changes are intended to streamline regulatory pathways and potentially encourage manufacturers to introduce products earlier to the Canadian market.

Government of Canada and Quebec Announce $70.8 Million for Youth Mental Health

On July 13 in Montreal, the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, and Quebec’s Minister Responsible for Social Services and the Fight Against Homelessness, Lionel Carmant, unveiled a new agreement providing $70.8 million over four years to Quebec from the federal Youth Mental Health Fund. Federal Support for Crisis Hotlines: Renewed Agreements Total $31 Million

Women and Gender Equality Canada confirmed continued federal investments in crisis hotlines serving victims of gender-based violence. Building on the $30 million provided since 2021, renewed bilateral agreements with provinces and territories will allocate $31 million over five years, with $6.2 million in ongoing funding. Between 2022 and 2025, supported organizations responded to over 761,000 calls, delivered 188,000 counselling sessions, and completed 231,000 referrals to additional services.
