- Status of Women Committee studies role of women’s shelters and transitional housing: On May 26, 2026, the Status of Women Committee will address the capacity of women's shelters and transitional housing, as well as issues regarding antifeminist ideology and abuse of senior women, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Wellington Building, Ottawa.
- Senate Committee on Human Rights reviews Bill C-9 (Criminal Code amendments): On May 25, 2026, the Senate Human Rights Committee will hold hearings on Bill C-9, considering amendments related to hate crime and protection of religious and cultural sites, with testimony from Justice Canada officials and civil society organizations.
- Senate Committee on National Finance reviews Bill C-30: On May 26, 2026, the Standing Senate Committee on National Finance will examine the subject matter of Bill C-30, the spring economic update implementation bill, including testimony from officials from Health Canada and other departments, starting at 9:00 a.m.

Canada affirms pharmaceutical strategy and international health engagement at the 79th World Health Assembly
On May 21, 2026, Health Minister Marjorie Michel led the Canadian delegation at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, establishing Canada's current priorities on both domestic and international health policy. During a session hosted by the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations, Minister Michel detailed actions to reduce drug approval timelines and costs, with a goal of bolstering the competitiveness of the Canadian pharmaceutical industry. She announced a federal commitment of $131 million over five years to provinces, territories, and the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance, intended to improve access to affordable prescription drugs. Additional bilateral meetings addressed international outbreaks (hantavirus and Ebola), health data governance, AI in healthcare, infectious disease preparedness, and global approaches to antimicrobial resistance. The Minister also signed a Letter of Intent for a Memorandum of Understanding on health cooperation with Brazil and participated in World Health Organization forums examining health misinformation.

Public Health Agency of Canada announces winners of Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Challenge
On May 20, 2026, the Public Health Agency of Canada recognized Kinvia and Black Creek Community Health Centre as grand prize recipients of the Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Challenge, awarding each $1.25 million to scale up their projects. Kinvia’s initiative brings year-round greenhouses to six Indigenous communities, targeting increased fresh produce availability for Indigenous youth in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick. The Black Creek Community Health Centre’s project leverages digital health coaching, co-designed with community input, for Black and high-risk populations in northwest Toronto, with community health workers delivering support via a digital platform.

Federal government supports mobile and virtual youth mental health care in New Brunswick
On May 22, 2026, Ginette Petitpas Taylor, MP for Moncton–Dieppe, announced a $10 million federal investment through the Youth Mental Health Fund to enhance Integrated Youth Services (IYS) across New Brunswick. The funding is allocated to the Canadian Mental Health Association of New Brunswick to expand mobile and virtual platforms, develop capacity in existing and planned service hubs, and improve access for youth in rural and remote areas, as well as those facing systemic barriers to care including newcomers and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.

Results from the third review of the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act (TVPA) tabled in Parliament
On May 20, 2026, Health Canada tabled the third legislative review of the TVPA. The review covers compliance and enforcement, identifies areas for further action, and discusses enhanced engagement with Indigenous Peoples concerning traditional tobacco uses. Recommendations include increased application of artificial intelligence and automation in enforcement and development of new enforcement mechanisms to address industry non-compliance.

Canada Impact+ Research Chairs competition co-chairs announced
On May 19, 2026, Ministers Mélanie Joly and Marjorie Michel named Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Martha Piper, and Janet Rossant as co-chairs of the Multidisciplinary Selection Committee for the Canada Impact+ Research Chairs competition. The initiative aims to recruit global research talent that advances health sciences and translational research. The committee, meeting in May and August, will review applications in accordance with new recruitment principles, with onboarding of successful candidates scheduled for later in 2026.

Federal investment supports development projects in Nigeria’s health sector
On May 22, 2026, Global Affairs Canada announced more than $30 million in support for humanitarian and development initiatives across West Africa. Notably, $2.5 million is directed to a World Bank-partnered technical assistance fund that targets governance and delivery improvements in Nigeria’s health services between 2026 and 2030, with objectives including increased capacity for planning, financing, and providing health services in all 36 Nigerian states.
