Canada launches $30.3 million in youth mental health project funding
On National Child and Youth Mental Health Day, Minister of Health Marjorie Michel announced $30.3 million in federal funding for 21 projects through the Youth Mental Health Fund. The investment is intended to broaden access to inclusive, community-based mental health supports for young people across the country, with an emphasis on services that are timely and designed for diverse populations. These funded initiatives are in addition to ongoing federal support for Integrated Youth Services, contributing to a simplified navigation of mental health care networks in cities, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. The newly supported projects will target local gaps in mental health training and support. Two projects will focus on developing Canada’s inaugural national clinical guidelines for problematic gambling in youth and for the treatment of youth eating disorders. Federal statements link these guidelines to efforts aimed at establishing more consistent, evidence-based care for adolescents and young adults.

New voluntary registry for breast implant recalls introduced by Health Canada
Minister of Health Marjorie Michel announced the launch of a voluntary registry for breast implant recalls and safety notifications. The registry permits patients, healthcare professionals, and others to receive direct alerts regarding breast implant recalls, supplementing the current notification mandate for manufacturers and healthcare facilities. Health Canada will provide communication materials and is informing practitioners and associations to increase patient awareness of the registry. The notification system is intended to strengthen patient safety and support informed decision-making. Reports of implant incidents remain mandatory for manufacturers and hospitals, while reports from professionals and the public are voluntary. Health Canada continues to monitor device safety both domestically and in line with international actions, such as mandatory manufacturer reporting of serious risks identified abroad.
